1.0 TSI manual, any problems with this engine?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm considering a Karoq 1.0 TSI with a  manual gearchange  when the lease is up on my  1.5 TSI DSG next March. Has any one experienced any first/second gear hesitation problems and also the Kangaroo symptoms with this engine & gearbox?  I'm well aware of the issues with the 1.5 but have not seen any reported problems with the  smaller engine.  I would  be grateful to hear of any  negatives before placing my order....Thanks.🙂

I was only aware of problems relating to the 1.5 engine but when looking at the What Car website the other day they mentioned that a sister magazine had a Karoq 1.0 on test and that was exhibiting the kangarooing problems. This was in reply to someone who had ordered a new SEAT with the 1.5 engine.

No reported issues really with the 1.0TSI's since they were built to get the WLTP / RDE or RDE2 results VW / Skoda needed.

But then you will never know how a year or 2 year old car / engine / drivetrain is until after customers have them a year or 2.

VW certainly dont do much R&D other than build them and test enough to sell them and then Customers will tell us if something goes wrong and eventually they might accept there is issues.

Personally i would go 1.0TSI and DSG because really that is when the engine is at its best with 7 gears.

If leasing and returning then the Extended Warranty on a DQ200 DSG is not relevant.

I have this engine in my GTI and has been spot on from day one, no kangaroos or stalling etc.

No hesitation since 16 months, works fine (with DSG)

Our 1.0 DSG has never missed a beat, great combination in the Karoq, shame Skoda UK are not selling it in UK any more, don’t know if it’s still available in other countries in 2020 spec.

Thanks for the info VAGCF, I'll take a look🙂.

What Car's sister magazine is Autocar and how unusual for Journalists that are contributing to Haymarket Media Group publications to find fault with VW Group models.

Not what was asked, but my 7 week old 1.0 Karoq with DSG gearbox is generally working very well in the 1500+ miles so far undertaken - no kangarooing.  My only niggle re the engine is a modest thrum between 1500-2000rpm, but I've seen 'characteristic 3 cylinder thrum' mentioned more than once in car mag reviews - about VAG & 3cyl engines from other makers.  In fact the engine is extremely quiet most of the time, even quieter than my previous refined 1200 4cyl DSG Yeti engine (that also had a mild boom - at 1200rpm - 4cyl characteristic).  The 3cyl engine is indeed very much quieter and smoother in the Karoq than that in a Skoda Citigo and a Fabia I'd driven in the last 12 months and ditto in the 3cyl 1.0 Ford Focus, from what I recall from my sister in law's car a few months ago.

I don't wish to emphasise the irritation the noise causes me at the noted rev range, but definitely there on uphills & almost sounds like the engine is mildly labouring.  Taking the discussion on beyond the original and talking more about the DSG, in the last few days I've started using the sport mode in the DSG box, when approaching hills at less than say 50mph and of course that totally avoids the noise + I suspect not significantly affecting economy.  I'd never really used sport mode on any of my previous autos - now at 3 score years & 11, it's a case of teaching old monkeys new tricks - but it's dead easy to engage and come out of and in a way makes driving a little more interesting without causing tiredness - probably aids anticipating the road ahead, keeping my mind a bit more active while driving.  The Karoq is notably more responsive in this S mode , but that's intended and to be expected.

As an aside the DSG Karoq does hang onto high gears on hills much longer than did my 1200 DSG Yeti.

It must be similarly easy to avoid the thrum on a manual 3cyl Karoq by selecting the appropriate gear when approaching a hill.

I've not actually read about this noise issue anywhere in this forum before, so I assume most people don't notice it or are not much bothered and that maybe indicates how mild the problem is, or am I just fussy.  As a further aside soon after aquiring the car, I noticed that knockng the lift up rear parcel shelf seemed to create a mild boom in the car, but placing a couple of heavy blankets on it much deadened this effect and in the process I reckon reduced the noted engine thrum + ditto some mild road bump thump noise - or am I imagining these improvements?

Finally, whilst writing, I've just read that Ford brought out a 1.5 3cyl engine recently in addition to the established & respected 1.0 version.  It has a cylinder shut down facility, this mode also added to some of their 1.0 engines.  They've also engineered in some interesting anti-NVH features.  I'll post a link or 2 if anyone is interested.

Only problem I had was this :-

…………..it's been fine since! 😀
