“Instant” oil leak appeared

Featured Replies

So my car has suddenly decided it wants to leak oil. First noticed on Tuesday few large spots of oil underneath where it’s been parked.

they are towards the rear of the engine, and scattered over a (wide-ish) area. I presume a pipe has split or similar.

May be a totally pointless question, but any ideas what may be causing it. I’m hoping to get it in the garage next week to get it sorted, however more curious than anything else as to what it could be

A clue as to what engine you have might help.

1.4 petrol

It's an MPI not a 16-valve, right?

I would think it's either PAS fluid or a split breather hose.

I did have the PAS pipes replaced earlier this year, although they were second hand ones.

just had a look at the pattern of drops on the floor from last night, about a shoe length (size 7) in height and width where all the blobs are.

when I was looking at my arb bushes at the weekend it did look rather oily in at the back/bottom of the engine

Her car is the 8 valve 1.4 mpi. I wish people would put it in their profiles.

I would check the oil pressure switch on the front of the engine. They can leak and the oil can get blown backwards.

Position number 2...

I’ve had a look at the oil pressure switch, not sure if it’s loose or not, doesn’t really appear too loose, and there doesn’t seem to be much oil/residue around it.

The worst/oily part of the engine I could see from the top is in the photo

Wherever it's coming from, it looks as though it's been leaking for a good while to me. The pic you posted the other day of your console bush showed oil all over the console bracket and it looked like it had been there a while. Best get it looked at as it's very hard to tell where it's coming from without seeing the car.

I did notice that it was “oily” when I took the ARB photo, although I can’t say how long that has been like it. (Past two MoT’s have picked up an oil leak.). However only this week it’s decided to dump anything out of the engine.

its booked into the garage next week, in the hope my new exhaust part arrives in time!

Rather rubbish photo from the dark this morning, although explains why it’s dripping over a wide area

Blimey, it looks like it's been doing it awhile judging by how oiled up everything is under there, have you checked PAS fluid level? What about the gearbox, a level check is impossible, you have to top it up until it's full.

I haven’t checked anything on it, I haven’t got time this weekend. It’s going into the garage on Monday anyway!
