Tachometer problem - some time?!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first car, a skoda favorit 93.

So ı like the car, little old,  but fun  :)

Anyway ı already made couple of repair on it, I will list them later.

anyway the previous owner made a really baş job with the electric work.

anyway the first time ı had the car the tachometer worked greatly, untill one day it just stopped working. I changed all the fuse but still not working. Anyway some time later my battery died,  forgot to close the headlights,  and simeone helpped me with a booster ( the thing you attach to the battery to give power) and everything was ok again! Sometime later ı had to go somewhere by night (800km), at half of the way it came back, but the next morning went out again. Since then never worked again.

for info : the gauge move a little when ı give full power.

the dashboard lights sometime goes, thdn come back after the car hit a bumper or rock on the road.

I found out they were lights in the button for headlight etc (they never worked).

the battery seems fine, always  start the car.

ps : can anyone has the electrical working of the favorit ?

thanks for your help

Looking at photos it makes me wonder why did you pay to get it?

Where are you from?

Turkey.

Two thing about this

1- car are expensive in turkey, you dont have much choice.  I pais 2000euro for this.

2- i trusted someone when ı bought the car. A big mistake...

I know it look bad, unfortunately... what i planning to do is to recheck all the wiring,  but i couldnt find the wiring scheme of the favorit on the net. If someone could provide it i would be very gratefull.

😱😵 you mean 2,000 (two thousands) or 200 (two hundreds) euro? Either way it is too much.

Two thousand.

Hahahah but yes you are correct it is too much. Basically the thing is there is a lot, 80% the least on taxation. And this can go up to 400%.

Small update,

Yesterday when going to work ı stopped somewhere  to get a breakfast (3 minute stop), when ı got back to my car and started the engine the tachometer  just worked,  out of nowhere and whitout a problem. Anyway ı was happy about it untill ı went back home in the afternoon, when ı started the car to go home the tachometer didnt worked.

I suspect a faulty cable or some kind of connection problem.

Just to be sure is there some kind of connection between the tachometer and the ignition key?

Thanks

Yes. The tachometer needs +12V to work. Duh...🙄

You can say that again. The tachometer is just the tip of the iceberg.

So last night ı could record the problem.

By the way it does not make any difference with the lights on or off.

  • 3 weeks later...

In these cases and with cars as simple as the favorit I don't bother spending more than a couple of days troubleshooting someone else's stupid mistakes. I would just straight rewire everything I suspect can be wrong.

Yes this is also what ı am planning to do.  To be honest it will not take me long but ı really dont have the time (between family and job ı only have the weekend and even then it is hard  :S)

hopefully ı will update when ı find the problem.

I am also planning to make small modification,  manly brakes (disc brake) conversion and engine upgrade ( ı am only looking to upgrade the engine to perform better when loaded and on hill) without increasing consumption (or at least not much). And lastly later getting a better suspension. Cause the suspension is really bad, I dont know if it is from factory or the suspension is dead.

If anyone have advices regarding this. :)

Disc brake conversion IS DOABLE but hard to source parts.
If the car is carburated you can do a lot in regards to power.
Suspension just fit something from a reputable brand.
I like KONI but KYB or BILSTEIN are fine.
