Which Front Disc size?

Featured Replies

I did a search but came up with no answers...
As most people have probably found, most parts websites offer a few disc sizes for the Mk2 Octy. I've got a 2006 1.9PD Combi, and can't find any info as to whether I need 280mm or 288mm discs.

The calipers are stamped with 'FSIII' if that helps (Im assuming ATE calipers?). I've tried the Vin decoders, but apparently my VIN doesn't exist:thinking:. Does anyone else with a 1.9 Combi know what goes on theirs? Found today that the pad warning plug had been pulled out due to an earlier 'incident' and upon checking the pads and discs its....marginal to say the least!

Will be 280mm front discs for 1.9PD

Sorry to question, but are you 100% on that???

I have a receipt for my Greenstuff pads which match Seat Altea 1.6XL FR 288

This was for my Octy and IIRC they are 288 on an Elegance Estate, as the op has, same as mine.

I will try and dig out my disc receipt hopefully to confirm either way. I bought them from elsewhere.

Use the PR code with a wholesaler like Autodoc and you wont go wrong.

Alternatively go to Eurocarparts and give them your registration number, when they bring the discs out say "no they are the wrong ones" keep doing this with every set they come back with until they say "I've tried all the others  these are the last ones", accept them as they will be correct, same deal for oil filters, any part really where there are several possibilities, doing it this way you save a week and 6 wasted return trips.

You can see why my preference is the likes of Autodoc, for filters, oil etc and specific parts I now use TPS, bought an accessory today, a Skoda door pocket waste bin, it was half the price at TPS than people are selling them for on Ebay!

If only the front brake PR code was reliably on the build sticker.

You can ask a friendly parts counter person to print out or send a pdf of the full car data, if you know one. Or go on erWin Skoda and get it yourself for a small fee.

apologies for the confusion, should of really said he has 280mm discs as he has FS111 capilers

other 1.9PD models with 4x4 or DSG may have 288mm discs fitted

must be the DSG factoring into the equation then i think.......

I've got 2.0 TDI and might be not your case but I had a problem when I tried to buy discs as well. Could be 280, or 288 or 312 (if I remember correctly). And all could be possible according to the VIN...

In the end the seller suggested me to buy 288 (I think) and they fitted well.

So, the conclusion is that - you might not know for sure. What do you do? I guess that you might remove the tyre and measure the size of the disc. As it's hard to measure the diameter, try to measure the circumference.

It's calculated as 2 * pi * R where pi = 3,14 and R = half of the diameter.

in case of 280 = 87,9 cm.

in case of 288 = 90,4 cm.

The difference is large enough to find out the size if measuring is done properly.

I'm with wiilydog

This is conclusive as far as I can see. These (FSIII) calipers, 1K0 615 123/4D, mount directly onto the wheel bearing housing, see projections out from the top left chunk on this page's illustration https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2006-419/6/615-615020/ This arrangement uses the 280mm disc on Octavia  Mk2, item 11 on that page.

Same calipers are used for 256mm or 280mm discs on Mk1 Octavia, according to this page: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2003-252/6/615-615016/

Same caliper part numbers are used with 256mm discs on Mk1 Fabia/9N Polo etc, which is how I'm familiar with them, using the same integrated carriers.

For the 288 discs, the caliper mounts onto a bolt-on extra bit (caliper carrier, item 2) as shown on this page: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2006-419/6/615-615025/

The calipers on this arrangement are suffix E of the same part numbers but quite different (which incidentally gives the lie to those that claim the letter suffices are just minor revisions of the same physical-fit part).

Thanks Guys, I'll go with the 280mm then. Just got to get the right pads now🤣

As a warning, there's another thread incoming.......faults on this thing are a bit like buses, they all come at once!

A 2.0TDI will never have 280mm.  It will be 288mm unless it's a vRS.

If it's a 1.9TDI with 50mm diameter struts and the caliper carrier  is integrated with the hub they will be 280mm.

Good spot.............as mine are iirc. Reason it being Combi, Elegance spec or DSG, I do not know.

288mm are on the 55mm strut.  55mm strut is for the heavier engine/trans combos due to higher load rating of the hub.

eg: 1.9tdi with 5 speed manual is a lot lighter than a 2.0tsi with DSG.  A mate fitted VRS TSI/DSG springs to his 1.9tdi manual hoping to lower it and it lifted the front 🙂

Always thought a petrol engine was a good bit lighter than a diesel

They mostly are, I believe DSGs are super heavy opposed to a simple 5mt.

I thought so too but as mafrohun says the DSG is way heavier than the simple 5 speed

This is just based on me seeing a DSG out of the car 😛 There's a lot more metal in a DSG than a 5mt. A DSG clutch pack weighs about as much as a base model Polo. Then you've also got the mechatronics unit, etc.
