Google Pixel 3 connection?

Featured Replies

Just got a new phone and I've not had the car long so obviously I'm trying to connect the phone to the car.  What a nightmare!

I can connect via Bluetooth (BT), and can make and receive calls, which is great, but can not connect via a cable.  As a result I can not mirrorlink etc.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Mirrorlink isn't AFAIK available for the Pixel 3 and you need a good quality cable for Android Auto.

I've got a Pixel 3 XL and I can confirm that it works great with Android Auto.

thanks @Freakcrab - what cable do you use?

@Nogrille do you definitely have SmartLink and is it enabled?  I have a pixel 3 and use AA pretty much daily.  You need AA app installed on your phone too.

@MarkyG82yes and I think so.  I have AA on the phone too.

It's just like the car and phone can't connect to each other.  Weird.

Check the cable then. I tried it with a cheap cable and had no joy.  Then went on amazon a got a cable with 90deg connectors that specifically said 'works with AA/CP'.  Its nice and short and lives in the car.

I've used a few Amazon sourced cables (seem to break a lot of them trying to fit the phone onto the top of that wee cubby in front of the gear stick).  Current one is an Aukey.  Make sure AA is installed on the phone and then select Smartlink in the car.

Pixel 3a XL here, Android 10 works perfect with Android Auto and Bolero.

Dont give up, something small it is.

Make sure that in the SmartLink section, press "Devices" and make sure your phone is checked.

This puzzled me for ages, that the radio would talk to the phone, but not enable android auto. Turns out for some reason that it had unchecked itself.

If you still have trouble, make sure that Android Auto is downloaded on your phone, and ensure a good quality cable - I use one that Google sent me for my previous warranty replacements of my Nexus 5x.

UPDATE - a new "decent" cable has sorted it.  I can now connect and use Android Auto (AA) but can't Mirrorlink.... because it's not available on Google phones....

Not available on the Pixels

Mirrorlink is old and deprecated, Android auto is the new way.

I had a similar problem when new - there is a setting in AA that allows it to connect to new devices, it was not enabled by default.

Mirrorlink is not that great having only experienced it briefly anything useable cuts out when over a se speed and you need to be able to hit the screen.

AA with the use of ok google (or a long press on the speech command button on the steering wheel) then tell it to do pretty much whatever you want, is great and the simplified interface makes finding what you want relatively straight forward.

I didn't know a long press did the Google assistant! That'll save me taking my hands off the wheel 😁

Little off topic, has anyone else noticed the Bolero occasionally getting stuck in "voice mode" after directions from Google maps, or using the Google assistant - i.e. it won't let you play music or anything until you press the voice button again and immediately say cancel? Happens occasionally, and previously I have been rebooting my radio and phone before I found the quick way to fix it.

Using Google maps with Android Auto I've occasionally had problems with Bolero getting stuck in announcement mode after giving some directions, which reduces the volume of the radio. It seems to be more likely to happen if I'm trying to adjust the volume as the announcement finishes. I've not found a way to fix it other than to wait for the next direction announcement.

Same issue as mine I think, just start the Google assistant or the cars voice mode (if you have it) and cancel. It'll come out of announcement mode.

slightly off topic, but....  Can anyone advise how to turn down the AA announcement volume?  I managed to accidentally turn it up somehow (I think via the steering wheel volume control) but when I try and turn it back down again, all it does is turn the music volume down!

Any help appreciated.

When it's speaking an announcement turn the volume down (I use the steering wheel controls)

I tried that and all it did was turn the music volume down even further....

Reboot the unit. Hold power button down for sixteen seconds.

Thanks, this appears to have cured the issue.  Now when I roll the volume during an announcement the "voice" logo is appearing on the dash rather than the "music" one.

Be careful changing the volume close to the end of an announcement, this is where my Bolero gets stuck in voice mode.
