climatic air con & ventilation system

Is the following normal or it there something wrong with the auto control.

When all of the switches for air to footwell/driver/windscreen/recirculation are off and the fan is switched on the 'Econ' mode lights up. When the fan gets to its 3rd or 4th speed the auto light comes on and then goes back to 'Econ' mode when either going to a faster or lower speed.

When one of the switches are on then the system stays fully in 'Econ' or 'Auto' mode depending on whats been set.

AUTO should only ever light up on its own. If you select any other button or adjust the fan speed then the system will drop out of AUTO. The exception to this is that when it's cold enough outside, you can have ECON and AUTO selected at the same time. The only time the ECON light should come on is when you actually manually turn on ECON. All it does is stop the air conditioning coming on. The system should never switch itself to AUTO. Again you need to select it.

Tried mine this morning - same thing - auto comes on at Fan position 3, goes out on 4.

As far as I've seen, depending on the climatic conditions inside the car at the moment, the 'auto' always knows its settings, whether it is on or off. So if you switch auto mode it goes to that position, for example 4. If you touch the speed selector (middle), to 3 or 5, then auto mode switches off automatically, because you have chosen another settings. If you come back to 4, auto mode switches on automatically, because it's the same position as his settings (and you know that at this moment it is auto).

If you switch off auto mode manually, it will never light again.

Eco button is independent, only manual switch on and off.

If I'm going wrong, please any other complete my explanation.

That's the best explanantion yet mate and it explains why auto goes on/off depending on the fan speed.

Exactly right, I was fiddling with my settings yesterday morning whilst thinking about this post and came to the same conclusions.

I still think a lot of these things are getting a bit over-complicated. I just use auto when the weather is hot or stuffy enough to need it, and auto with econ the rest of the time, just altering the temperature. The only other function that seems useful is the screen demist.

i never use econ tbh on the basis that the econ wont come on unless it gets too hot anyway. Also it saves me from forgetting to run my ac a bit during the winter months to keep it going ok

Yes, they do say A/C should be run 5 or 10 mins a week regardless, in most cars. As I understand it, "econ" does exactly what "auto" does except it obviously won't take the inside car temperature below the outside temp' because the A/C compressor or something isn't on. I'm still intrigued that you can have the "econ" light on with, or without, the "auto" light being on.

I think "econ" without auto is just a normal heater system without responding to the temperature pre-set, while with "auto" on it warms you up to the setting, but that could be completely wrong!!! [And with me it probably is!!]

the way it was explained to me (by the dealer) was that the econ mode was light your normal heating system so the temperature blowing in can't be lower than the outside temperature. The air is just blow in regardess of the temperature inside the car whereas auto I thought was the air con making the car cooler than the temperature outside.

Hence I can't understand why econ + auto should come on together at fan stage 3 or 4 when none of the switches are pressed in. When a switch is pressed in eg air to footwell then in econ mode the auto does not come on at fan stage 3 or 4.

As regards the automatic climatic part (settings for passengerside and driver side) does this also work on econ mode or is it just auto mode?

If the climatic is like climatronic on Mk1 octy then on the econ setting, the A/C compressor is off. Temperature regulation still occurs, but as stated already the interior temp will never be cooler than outside. On Auto, the A/C compressor is running, but the air can be cooled lower than outside. However on auto, heat can also be applied to the conditioned air to increase the interior temp to that set, especially handy on damp days where the A/C compressor removes moisture stopping the interior steaming up.

When I had the octy, the climatronic was always set to auto even in winter. With the temp set to 21c the interior was nice and warm even with the a/c on.

The air con can definitely warm as well as cool - but the drying feature is often overlooked - you get your best demist with the air con on.

Normally if you are on Auto and you press Econ then the Auto light goes out. This is because in order for the climate control to have the ability to fully control the cabin temperature automatically, it needs to be able to actively cool as well as heat the air entering the cabin. Pressing Econ turns off the AC compressor thus preventing active cooling thus Auto goes off.

The exception to this is that in the winter when the external temperature is very low, the AC will not work. (This is a protective measure to prevent the compressor freezing up) but regardless of this when the external temperature is low, the climate control doesnt need to actively cool the air to ensure the the full range down to 16 degrees is attainable. Hence Auto doesnt go off if you select Econ.

In fact you could argue that there's no need to press econ in winter time at all as the system will turn off the AC compressor anyway when the external tempertaure is low enough.

That's my take on it anyway.
