identify part help

Featured Replies

Hi

I am no mechanic and need some advice. My Skoda fabia 1.2 2004 stopped starting. I pulled engine cover and noticed heavy cracking and corrosion in the hole at front of the picture. My question is what is the part thats gone and what would a replacement cost. Engine ticking over not sustaining power. Looks like a write off to me.

Any advice appreciated

Welcome.

A Mod will move your question to the Mk1 section for you.

The exhaust manifold heatshield is not your problem.

What happens when you try to start it?

Silence?

Turning over on the starter motor but not springing into life?

Other?

Wait: you say it stopped starting but it idles?

Thanks Wino,

Following a normal drive to work the car was left for 2 hours. Turned key and the engine turned over but could not sustain. It was idling but volume and power around 10 percent. Insufficient to move car which stalled. Now when I turn key engine tries to start so I guess battery is fine. I can smell petrol, however finally engine does not fire. Thanks Rob .

Sounds like the timing chain may have jumped, possibly. Just a guess though.

Get a mobile mechanic out to it, preferably someone with VW/Skoda experience.

Too much to justify spending on it, probably.  Diagnose properly first.
