Rear headlight does not work after bulb change

Featured Replies

Hi, had a problem with the main light of the Octavia 2, 2006, 1.4 petrol, on the left side for over a month. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it wouldn't turn on. Generally, turning on and off the light made it stay on.

But now have the same problem for the rear left side lights. I changed the back indicator light on the same side but it only worked for until I restarted the car. I check the fuse box near the battery, but did not see any burn marks. Maybe I did not look properly enough, or at the wrong places.  Can anybody suggest me something, maybe changing some fuses to be sure, or replace all the bulbs in the rear light?

But I think it's not the bulbs, cause they work for a period of time.

I'd appreciate the help, thanks!

When the rear side goes out after restarting, do you have a bulb failure light come on shortly after?

yes, it will come on after something is not lighting up. I changed the light at the front, it's working so far. But on and off for the large bulbs on the left rear light.

I just had to replace one of the Reverse light bulbs. Bulb worked ok but then threw a Bulb Out Warning. Checked all the bulbs and this one looked fine with the element intact etc. It was a cheap one from EuroCarParts. Changed it for a Lucas one and it's been fine ever since.

When a bulb lights up but goes out after starting it is an indication that the bulb failure system has found the current in the bulb is too low. It then removes the supply from the bulb in most cases (it doesn't on my DRLs).

So the question is why is the bulb current too low?

Points to check:

Is the battery voltage low?

Are the bulbs the correct type and hence wattage (and a quality make according to Golf-Fiend above)?

Check for corrosion on the earth connections to the body (particularly in the rear side boot/cubby hole area where water collects)

Generally check wiring and connections for poor contact.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Yesterday morning , before work I tried to look again at the car, and discovered some rust on the connection in the rear light. I cleared it, added wd-40, bought two new W3W bulbs ( because they went out during testing) and it looks  like it's all good now. I guess it was multiple problems at once. Thanks for the help :)
