TFSI VRS cranks but won't start with no MIL

Featured Replies

A week or so ago we got home and parked in the garage as usual. I went out to the garage a few minutes later to find a faint haze of smoke. I poked around a bit and couldn't find an obvious cause... then the next day on starting, immediately running on three cylinders and plumes of smoke coming from under the bonnet and the MIL on. My OBD reader showed a failed coil pack, so after the usual wrestle to get the engine cover off, I discovered that one coil has let go in a fairly spectacular way and set fire to the end of the wiring loom in the process... so I bought a new plug and coil, spliced the plug into the loom and installed the coil... and then got a HPFP failure when I tried to start the engine. Looked at the pump and the plug had snapped off the top, I suppose I knocked it while wrestling the engine cover off.

So yesterday I replaced the HPFP, now I have no ECU errors showing but the engine still won't start. It cranks fine but there is clearly no attempt to fire at all so I'm guessing there's either no spark on any cylinder or no fuel pressure. I can't smell fuel while cranking so I'm guessing it's fuel... any ideas as to the likely cause? I suppose it's possible the new HPFP is duff but I guess it's also possible that all the electrical mess has taken out something else. Or is it just that I somehow need to prime the new pump?

OK now I feel like an idiot... the coil pack fuse had blown. Bit odd that the ECU can't at least report a generic "lack of ignition" type error though.

OK now the car runs fine but neither key fob will lock or unlock the doors or the boot. The central locking switch inside the car only locks and unlocks the front doors... any ideas?

Turn of and on. Ie disconnect battery for 10 mins and reconnect?

I tried that, made no difference whatsoever. :D

Guess I should start a new thread for this to generate a useful title.

Might have to re-learn the key to the car. Easy enough to do, can't remember the exact process but plenty of vids on youtube:thumbup:
