Steel Wheels

Featured Replies

I am going to change my alloy wheels for steel ones with winter tyres, while the alloys are off going to have them refurbished.

My question is can i use the original alloy wheel studs on steel wheels?.

Thanks.

Yes the original alloy wheel bolts will be same for steel wheels

Just curious where did you get steel wheels from and how much did they cost? I've been thinking of doing the same thing, having a set of steels with winter tyres for the colder months.

Keep an eye out on ebay and Marketplace as there are some bargains about. I have picked up a couple of sets of alloys recently very cheap.

Picked these 7 x 16 Borbet wheels with Dunlop Winter Sports fitted all tyres over 6mm for £82 on ebay.

£82!!!!!!!! What did you search for? I've been on the lookout for a set of alloys the same as the ones I have now but none have come up anywhere near that cheap, especially not with winter tyres fitted

Search for "Bud jet aloy weel" as anyone thick enough to sell a set for £85 probably can't spell

I did a few searches such as Audi winter wheel, Skoda Winter wheel, 5 x 112. But these popped up under Winter Wheels and just happened to have winter tyres.

The set I got a few weeks ago were under Audi winter wheel and they were A3 wheels with very good Goodyear winter tyres but gave the to my dad but they were £62 for the set.

I did have to travel a but for them about an hours drive which some people wont do so can miss the bargains.

I've never bought "just tyres".  i am on my 6th set of rims/tyres (inc the factory set) in 190,000km.  Every set has been ~AUD400 (200GBP) with unmarked rims and near new tyres.  The best bit is that when the tyres are near bald i sell the rims for around $150-$200.  Even if nobody wanted to buy them I'd get $60 at the scrap yard.

About 6 months before I need tyres I start searching ebay, gumtree and forums.  When something comes up i buy it, even if I have to store it for a few months.

Thanks, I had a real good search yesterday, and now I've got my eye on a set of decent alloys and winter tyres!

Just keep checking as loads come. Add you location to you profile as someone near might have some.

Check out Marketplace on facebook as well.

The original Skoda alloy and steel wheels use the same studs.

However, if you have or intend to use aftermarket/other manufactures wheels, you should check they use the same studs...

Fingers crossed.

I have a set of 16" steel wheels with Nokian WR A3 winter tyres fitted (they have 4mm of tread left, but have slight cracking around the tread). The wheels are black, and need a bit of TLC - surface rust.

You can have them for free if happy to either collect direct, or pay courier costs Paisley Freight.

You can also have the individual wheel covers, the 'tyre tree' with cover, and the VW T5 wheel caps.

I had the steelies on when the car was serviced in March and was advised to replace the tyres due to the cracking around the tread.

I've subsequently fitted Goodyear Vector 4 All Season Gen2. And the wheels are taking up space in the shed.

Thanks that is very generous of you, but I've won this on eBay and I'm going to pick it up this week: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283657039970

I'm sure someone else will take you up on the offer of your steelies though!
