Clutch Master Cylinder Failure?

Featured Replies

I've had an issue with the clutch pedal over the past few days with the CR170.

On the first occasion, after a few days of the car sitting on the drive, the clutch pedal went down 2/3 before any resistance, but this improved with pumping the pedal a few times. After 5 mins of driving, it was back to its normal operation. After leaving the car overnight, the pedal is is probably dropping just under halfway before resistance, which goes back to normal after a couple of mins and several gearchanges.

So, does this sound like a master or (Gawd help me) a slave cylinder failure? I understand the former is a darn sight cheaper than the latter?!

All help much appreciated.

Cheers... Rob

Hi Rob,

I had the rotten luck of the slave cylinder failing just before Christmas last year.  The only symptoms were the clutch seemed to slip/snatch in the morning when reversing out the driveway but it then cleared.  I actually thought it was something to do with my Haldex unit until the morning I jumped in the car and the pedal went straight to the floor and didn't return.  Stuck in first gear with the car pointing nose first into the drive.

AA recovered the car from my drive to the local dealer by jamming it in reverse and starting the engine then stalling it to get it onto the road for the recovery wagon.  There was a trail of fluid on the drive and road....check for signs of any fluid leaks....

The symptoms I experienced was the clutch becoming contaminated with fluid leaking overnight and causing slip.

Result was a new clutch and slave cylinder and approx £800+ lighter......not helped my car is a 4x4 which entailed more labour.

The pain of that bill was not pleasant and has tainted ownership of the car....

Anyway.....get it checked out before you have a breakdown, something certainly not right.

Cheers

Fortunately at present, the car isn’t showing any of those symptoms you encountered, quite the opposite in fact; the clutch is operating perfectly, albeit very low down on the first occasion it occurred. I’m going to get it checked this week and fingers crossed, it’ll be the master not the slave.
