Happy with KW's but...

On bumpy cycles I find they become a little to soft, that is the underside seems to catch frequently. Now this is not really a major problem, I slow down...

okay those who laugh laugh now, never ground a stock 4x4, or not under the same conditions, BUT...it's asily fixed with harder springs :D

Q is what ratings do they go up in and what formulae; other than trial and error, should I use?

Don't want to get dentures falling out firmness but..ack well it's harder to compress (wing pushing) than the stock rs, yet when out and pushing it seems to compress really easily...

Over to the experts...

Dampers are also wound right up down out in, all the way round the plus.

I have noticed similar shall we say "problem" but I would add that even when slowing down I am probably going faster than I could have with the std set up

Overall the Improvement is vast & I never get that sideways hopping I used to get with the Impreza which was just TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard

Still would be interested to see what others more knowledgeable than me think

Colin what height is your car set at, I am at what I believe is RS height or there abouts. If you are lower then the bottom of the car is nearer the road & therefore more likely to bottom out & we both know people who have "modded" their sumps on the RS

Stuart,

I am slighlty lower (only by a finger) than a vRS. Kind of going for the extra compression on the spring makes it a little firmer theory; erm no.

Maybe it's the progressive nature of the spring, I will not have the car this weekend :( but will be "testing" again soon with a few alterations and height changes. I think a std height ride should also be as good as where it is now, although I suspect it will have more roll. I know what you mean about "skippy", 250 might do it, the rears seem fine, but then the weight is the front.

I have to state that without the KW's for me the 4x4 would of been sold by now...compromised on some roads improved on the ones I use everyday; just need to get it's bounce sorted now.

I get the bounciness thing too at the moment. I guess that's the penalty of not matching your springs to your suspension. :( - I have to take speed bumps a lot slower now, and potholes and some undulations can easily bottom out the suspension with a nice "BANG!" :D - I'm sure it's not doing any damage and I'm not worried given the performance elsewhere on the road.

One thing to bear in mind is as you shorted the springs it makes them think they are harder ie a spring with a poundage of say 200lbs/inch that is 10inches long will actually behave like a spring with a higher poundage that is 12 inches long .

The spring and damper rates have to be matched for the job you want but the common mistake people make is to put harder/lower springs on without uprating the dampers and all you get is the bouncy/skippy ride , a better solution is to stiffen up the dampers but leave the springs the same .

When safarying/hillrallying the LR we found the best setup was to be had using a soft but longer spring and rock hard gas dampers (ok suspension travel was the important thing ) the net result of this was the whhels stayed on the ground to transmit the power and the vehicle didn't bounce around but the dampers kept everything tought (body roll and no sideways skipping while cornering and yes 4 wheel 50mph powerslides round roundabouts were fun) .

Suspension setup's a minefield of maths or trial and error combined with a bit of personal taste depending on your driving style but most modern cars seem to have the springs too stiff and the dampers too soft, I've got to admit the RS is't as bad as most though .

I'm just going with the flow for now in my 4x4 - no money for KW's.

I thought that I would really get annoyed with it compared with the Impreza, but I haven't - the ride comfort and composure is only upset when you have rapid left followed by quick right bends, when the softness/height shows.

For the rest of the time it does really well with Jabba power.

My priorities have shifted around now - brakes next then suspension lowering.

As Colin and Ian have mentioned, the 4x4 is surprisingly good if you throw it in at low speeds and tight approaches - the roll angle is high, but it grips !
