Hi guys, I recently calculated my mpg (I did it pretty accurately. 

213 miles combined town and country driving took 37.04L of fuel = 26.14 mpg.

1.8 20v turbo 150 hp version in the estate.

 

It seems rather poor to me, I was driving very sensibly for 90% of the time. 

 

What sort of real world MPGs are you guys getting from you 1.8 turbos? 

I used to have a '04 plate hatchback, I seemed to average about 32 - 34 around town and upto 44 on motorway.

Best I've done in my 2005 motor is 48 on the mway averaging 65mph. I'd go along with Lukey's figures, very real world.

34 to 36 most of the time and if I get stuck behind someone doing 40-50mph I can get anything up to 44mpg! And that's on average anywhere between a 13 to 20 mile journey at the most...pretty happy with that.

My B6 A4 Q 1.8t is more like the 26 to 30mpg at best so I'm not impressed with that car compared to the VRS

It seems I am definitely getting crappy mpg compared to what it should be.  

 

I will start investigation and see what I can come up with ... At the moment I suspect a cheapo MAF I bought from eBay. 

Quick test -

Is it rough on idle?

unplug said maf and run it without..

Is it now less rough? 

If so its the maf.

 

Test 2 - is it a non genuine, engine code specific maf?

Yes?

1,8-20v turbo estate here also, but a 2000 model with automatic gearbox, so it is quite thirsty,  about 9 liters/100km / 31mpg (UK gallon) on average.

26 feels quite low to me if you have manual gearbox. Should easily get over 30.

Well that clears that up then... 

It is a non-genuine' non engine code specific part from China courtesy of fleabay. 

The original OEM part cost almost they same worth as the car🤣🤣🤣.

I did some actual research this time ...

My engine code is AGU which has original part number 037906461c for the MAF.  I took a pic of the original part number last year. 

I didn't keep the part, when the aftermarket one seemed to work ok I binned the original 🙄. 

The original had a sort of plastic flap in it, my cheapo Chinese one has a what look like a fuse wire.... It does seem to work but perhaps it is sending effed up info to the ECU (not enough to stop it running but enough to cause poor fueling ratios). 

 

The original Bosh part is available on eurocarparts for £230 which is insane price for one wee sensor, is there an aftermarket alternative that will work properly? 

 

Can't be sure, but you could assume NKG would work, £114 @ autodoc.co.uk.

Magneti Marelli is a brand name too, or at least it was when I had a moped 20 years ago. ;) Their offer is £56 which isn't far from cheapest Chinese knock-offs.

 

Mine has humping idle and I've been thinking of swapping MAF anyway .. if no other reason than it has 190k miles on it.

Shame you binned the original - I bought one from a dealer (in 2012 I think) and it was definitely sub £100 on an exchange basis.

 

Might be worth seeing how much it is without one to exchange. Also remember that ECP/CP4L/GSF nearly always have a sale on, rather like DFS, Oak Furniture Land etc.

Pretty sure some say the original white Stig (ben) did from DFS....

I probably average about 35mpg on the whole and that's with a near 50:50 mix of town and motorway driving. I seem to get about 50 miles for each 1/8 marker of the fuel tank.

That seems to be about right. 

 

I have found someone local to me scrapping an old 1.8t A4 for parts so I am going to get the MAF from it and see if it will work any better than my fleaBay knock off MAF. 

*Update*

The pre-owned OEM MAF from the A4 went straight in with no issues and the car feels more like 'back to its old self': no hesitation or engine stutters and noticably more power at the top end of the rev range. I can't really check the mpg properly now because the flipping thermostat went bad last week too, but I am hoping for an improvement. 

I will have to wait for next pay day to do the thermostat then I will recalculate mpg.
