Numberplate lighting

Featured Replies

Evening all. My number plate lights are not working on my mk3 Octavia. Warning light is on and the car advises me to check number plate lighting.

I have changed the bulbs and they are still not coming on.

I want to check the fuse but the manual does not list the numberplate lighting location under fuse section either in cabin or engine bay.

Please could somebody advise on fuse location and other troubleshooting I can try.

Also the left bulb holder is loose because of the metal clip is bent out of shape. Please could somebody advise on the part number.

I have searched forums also and people advise of swapping to LEDs...but these need coding. Any advice as to the cost for this?

Ideally I just want existing bulbs to work.

Thanks in advance

The fuse might be the same one as for the side lights.

Have you checked that the bulbs work out of the car?

They can blow the first time you turn them on.

Have you checked there is power getting to the bulb holders?

Thanks AG Falco

Are the interior boot lights working?

The number-plate lights do not have an individual fuse.  They take their power from from the on-board voltage controller, which is a complex piece of kit behind the glove box.  The controller supplies many systems on the car and has several fused supplies, but these have heavyweight (30A or 40A) fuses and supply power for distribution to many parts of the car.  The lighting switch is connected to this controller.

It is possible that you may have a problem with the controller, but any investigation of that is a specialist job.  It's more likely that you have a wiring continuity problem.  The lights get their power from pin 59 of a 73-pin connector on the controller.  There are intermediate 5-pin connectors in the tailgate and the C-pillar.  Check that you are getting 12V to the lamp housing - if not; check those connectors.  Check that you have a ground connection  on the other side.  The ground from the bulb holders is spliced with others in the tailgate wiring loom and the whole lot connected to ground in the C-pillar.  If the high-level brake-light is still working, the ground in the C-pillar is fine.

Thanks guys.

Interior boot lights are working.

Thanks GaryL, very helpful.

Don't suppose anyone can recommend a good garage in or near Nottingham?
