Which oil to use?

Featured Replies

Newbie 2006 T FSI VRS owner - picking car up Friday, driving to Wales Saturday , could anyone recommend the best ( or Vag recommended ) oil to use, I want to be able to top up if necessary, and give it an oil and filter next week. Bought it from a s/h dealer - would rather someone with a genuine interest/knowledge give me a pointer - I notice there a special FSI oils etc. Thanks in advance.

Covered in lots and lots of threads in here. If you can find them! VW 502.00 or VW 504.00.  Stick to Mann, Bosch, Mahle aftermarket or otherwise Genuine Filters.

Oil that meets those specs above is fine, I’ve been a fan of shell oils in the past, I run shell oil in my b5 s4 and that’s running 450bhp without issues, It depends on your usage, I’ve currently put GSF own brand in the VRS but that won’t be in there for long, it was just a interim oil change as the car is new to us too.

if you change the oil regularly then it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s the correct spec, if you was following a long life service plan, which I don’t recommend then I’d be using the best you could afford.

I find shell oil quietens down the engines well and has good cleaning agents keeping the insides nice and sparkly :)

this is said S4 after 2 years of low mileage but heavy usage, so although I have done many miles in it, nearly all of them have been fun ones :)

Don't pay more for a fancy container and a brand name. Just use the stuff the Skoda franchised main dealers often use.

VAG's own branded Quantum Longlife 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil, VW504.00 and VW507.00, which is manufactured by Fuchs.

£24 for 5 litres delivered directly to your door from a Skoda main dealer...

Brill, Thanks for that - good info & good price, will look into it asap. Cheers Mate  !

Shell hx8 is currently £20 a 5L bottle from euros with their discount.

Shell HX8 (5W40) is only VW502.00, not VW504.00, so fine for the fixed service interval, but not for variable...

Think I'd pay the extra £4 for the 5W30 VW507.00.

You recommended running variable services?

You could also argue that the 5w40 may help slightly with oil consumption and if the car is modified or driven harder than normal.

I don't think I did?

I am an advocate of the fixed service interval, unless annual mileage is high and mainly motorway.

Oh sorry, I think I got the wrong end of the stick here, you say that shell is ok and the correct spec for fixed but not variable servicing so you’d rather choose an oil that is more expensive and better suited for variable servicing which you don’t actually recommend? Isn’t that kind of the same as “don’t pay more for a fancy container or a brand name”? As your paying more for a spec you don’t actually need?

We don't know what service interval the OP's car is set to, if fixed then your recommendation of the Shell HX8 is perfectly fine.

My recommendation is to get the better oil and to pay almost the same price as the the inferior Shell oil.

Given the limited information, all bases covered.

I did recommended in my original post to go with fixed servicing for the OP to be fair, which you also seem to agree on, and the OP is asking for advice on the subject. You are still conflicting your original statement of “don’t pay more if it’s not necessary”. It may only be a little bit extra but it almost pays for your oil filter on top.

It would of been better if you had stated that your recommendation is better for variable or long life servicing schedules to make it clearer for others.

I have found some supermarkets car oil much improved in fact one I use actually meet VW 507 highest spec and costs in region of £20 for 5 litres

Eurocarparts are a good source for big brand oils. Shell, Valvoline, Castrol etc.

Realistically, any of these are ok if they meet the VW specs listed above in 5w30.

Sometimes Tesco's do Castrol on offer and I buy it ready for when I need to do an oil change.

I'm not conflicting myself, the Quantum oil is better than the Shell oil. It has improved specifications.

Me saying "don't pay more if it's not necessary" isn't the same as "don't pay more".

The reason I didn't state my recommendation is better for variable services is because that isn't what I think.

VW507.00 is best for both fixed and variable servicing. This is why the main dealers also use it for all engine variants and service intervals.

Had the Shell HX8 not had Shell written on the container it would likely be even cheaper. This was my point. For almost the same price (£3.84 difference) you're paying for better oil instead of an inferior oil and a premium label on the bottle instead.

If running fixed servicing the shell oil isn’t inferior, it’s doing the same job.

as we seem to be getting nowhere with this lets throw a curve ball in.

it’s 5w30 and 507 spec, it’s made by Mannol so no fancy brand or bottle (although I quite like the old style metal tins) it’s also nearly 25% cheaper than quantum so a big saving over a few services, and the seller has sold 110 units so seemingly a good source for oil.

i’ll look forward to seeing recommendations of this oil in the future :)

Shame you didn't recommend it before the Shell 😂

That would of saved a lot of typing that’s for sure 😂

Phew !! Thanks for all the input - We can be very fussy about stuff ( I'm the same ) - Have decided to go for Castrol Magnatec C3 5w-30, may change to 5w40 for summer.  I like the idea of the Magnatec principle because of how I ( mainly ) use the car at the mo !  I just love this car !!! Why didn't I buy one years ago 😁🤩😛 !!

I second how much I like this car, the only gripe I have is at stage 1 we are struggling to put power down through the front wheels, running winter tyres probably doesn’t help to be honest.

but it goes, stops and turns really well for a car of this size, I’ve contemplated turning one into a track toy it’s that much fun.

Have used Quantum oils (VAG's "own brand" and reportedly made by what was the old Duckhams organisation!) on both the Octy (and in SWMBO's Mk IV Golf) for over a decade - never had an issue on that side. Last couple of years, I've been buying same stuff online (because of the recent restrictions on TPS selling to non-trade customers!), although one has to be careful about the sellers as some are apparently selling counterfeit "Quantum" stuff!

PS: always gone with fixed service intervals as I don't trust "variable" ones. Used to mean about 8k miles after the remap (and thus 2-3 times a year), but now every 12 months since I retired and only do about 6k per year.

My mechanic says: does not matter make of oil, make sure it is 5w30 and change it every 10k km/7k miles. More frequent oil changes is better for engine, rather then one more expensive oil keep it there for 2y

@petrik25

That would be right for your TDI, must use VW507 so 5w 30 FS Long Life.  The oil required.

(10,000 km / 6,200 mile oil changes maybe for those doing low annual miles, and the benefit of these low mile changes is to the person getting paid cash money to do them.)

For a TFSI / TSI 5w 40 FS so to VW 502 might be better with fixed servicing and 10,000 mile oil and filter changes are often enough.

Long life oil and short lived TFSI/ TSI might prove true..
