Dimming mirror gaps

Featured Replies

Hello all, I have a 2018 SE spec Superb which has auto-dimming rear view and door mirrors.

It's coming to that time of year when a lot more driving is done in the dark so these are really coming into their own versus the manual flip. However, there appears to be a strip of about 5mm all round the edge of the mirrors where there is no auto-dimming, hence, when cars are changing lanes behind you, or you are going round a roundabout and lights are coming from all directions, then there is almost a flashing effect as the lights are reflected briefly in the non-dimmed section. Hope that makes sense...

Is this by design? My wife's 15 plate Golf has an auto-dimming rear view mirror only (not side mirrors) but in hers, the whole surface dims.

This is by design, it's been that way since it was introduced in the Mk2 Superb. My Mk3 has it too, the frameless interior rear view mirror dims completely though. I know what you mean about the flashing effect, not much you can do about it.

I will say when you spend some time at night in a car without any automatic dimming side mirrors, you remember that it could be alot worse! :)

Thanks, good to know it's not just me.

I wonder if the rear view mirror in the SE spec is different from the L&K version though. It is definitely frameless but I guess since the L&K has Lane assist and other gadgets then the mirror may be slightly different.

Yes, the dimming side mirrors do make driving on the motorway in the dark a lot more pleasant.
