Skoda Octavia 2009 1.9TDI Power surge & engine shudder

Featured Replies

Recently come across a problem with my Skoda that when taking off when it gets to around 2500 rpm there is a power surge in which the car shoots to over 3000 rpm.

Then when driving in 3rd, 4th & 5th the car shudders when getting to 2,500 as if there is some sort of limiter on it and struggles to get passed these rpm. I just got a full service, timing belt and pump done so I thought mechanic may have made a mistake but the car has been in the garage for 3 weeks now he's gone through all the fuel system and anything he thought could be the problem and has run out of ideas. He then sent the car to a separate garage who specialise in audi, skoda & vw and he found where on the cams and replaced them, put the car back together and there is no change.

Both these have run out of ideas. Has anyone any insight to what this could be or have a similar issue.

Clutch slip?

Sorry now but I'm not too mechanically savvy but would that be the symptoms?

Don't know how two mechanics have run out of ideas but want to have some idea of what it could be if I bring it elsewhere

Power surge , shudder plus revs shoot over to 3000 in a higher gears sounds like a potential symptom of clutch slip - especially in the higher gears.

Slip shows up in higher gears first, sometimes along with some judder (metal & friction material turning at different speeds). Basically the engine (+ flywheel/pressure plate) turns at a higher speed that the clutch friction plate. This initially can transfer more energy(hence surge) but it soon wears out what is left of the clutch.

To test get up to  bit of speed and then cruise in 5th gear.  Slip the clutch (push in a little) so the engine revs up a bit (using some throttle). Then fully release the clutch pedal at the same time as flooring the throttle - if the revs snap back to where they should be then clutch OK, if engine revs up higher then clutch is shot.

Might not be this but just a thought.

Secondly - Are you sure the cambelt was setup correctly as timing of cams and pd pumps important. If it was fine before hand.......

Anything else messed with eg injectors? Worth mentioning even if you think it's not important

You may have more than one problem here but

That definitely sounds like clutch slipping, does the speed increase when the RPM shoots up? I imagine the engine probably produces its peak torque somewhere around 2500rpm so it makes sense that this is where the clutch would start slipping.

I don't know what would cause this but I don't think a slipping clutch would be the culprit

I got the car back and mechanic says he's not sure the problem, I don't trust him and had it plugged in with a friend of mine. This is the only engine fault error that came up, another problem is ticking over a bit low and car is shaky when just in neutral. Do you think replacing these could sort the problem.
