Yetis horns

Featured Replies

On the scrounge for help please. Having recently bought a 2010  2.0TDI  4X4 Yeti , I am more than pleased with it. Superb performance and economy with the re-assurance of 4 wheel drive if the weather turns really nasty , altho' a tad unlikely living in the far end of the South West.

However, the only two faults I have got with this 120.000 miler are that the front anti-bump warnings are inoperative , rear ones working just fine, and the cars' horn seems to be working on only one horn , or else the cars are fitted with a pretty ghastly sounding horn.

As there is no Haynes manual available for the car , I resorted to phoning our local dealership and speaking to the Service Department. The chap seemed very vague and advised me they had no details of where the horn was , but he thought they were located in front of the radiator.

Well, as my car has aircon, there are of course two radiators and from what I can see with a torch, there is no sign of any horns at that location. My guess would be located behind the plastic inner wing liners and the metal inner wing but don't want to start stripping bits off if I'm wrong.

Can anyone shed light on either of these two problems and also any advice on where to get some ideas on car maintenance , I see there are some CD's available on eBay , but has anyone got any experience of these ?

Any help /advice/information gratefully received. Thank you.

Does your car have front sensors?
What model is it?

As for the horn

There are two horns, one in front of each wheel, behind the bumper. With the bumper on, you can access them by pulling back the wheel arch liner but they are a pain to get at and the plugs are a pain to get off when you can't see them. If its easy to get the bumper off, then that might be a bit more skin friendly way of doing it. I got a pair of horns from ebay, if the packing was to be believed they are the same as on a VW Golf.  I was rather disappointed with how mine lasted, they failed at 2.5 years old and I'd have got them done under warranty if I wasn't trading it in that week - should have checked earlier really.

Apologies if I am being condescending, but are you sure it has front sensors fitted? they weren't that common on Yetis.

Thank you to Urrell and to edwards for you most expeditious replies to my query and in fact giving me the answers.

Firstly the horns. So they are known to fail ?.... and I'm expecting the problem to be with the left hand ( near side ) one as the left hand headlight moves slightly when pushed suggesting that side has perhaps been knocked in the past . I'll start my investigations there ( when the constant rain ever lets up ) .

SO thank you so much for the information and the picture .....fantastic!  A lot more help than the Main Agents here in Cornwall for sure.

I now bow my head ........it would seem you are both correct and there are no sensors in the front bumper. Jeez! I really am getting geriatric .... thanks  to you both for pointing out the obvious, my only defence being that the only other car I've ever owned with proximity sensors had them fore and aft ( A VW Passat )

Wonderful help , so much appreciated. Thanks again!

Its only anecdotal, but there do seem to be a number of reports of horns failing on Yetis. One of ours went intermittent at about 18 months old, but every time I went to get it looked at under warranty, it had mysteriously fixed itself 🙂 Of course, the week before trade in, my wife pipes up with 'oh, the horns aren't working, will that be OK when we take it in?' errrrr, no.

Recently did a front end repair on my new Yeti, the horn was where the one is shown in the picture, there was not one on the drivers (right hand) side and I dont recall seeing any redundant connectors, the single horn does sound rather weedy and effeminate.

It is possible that one has been removed but given the inaccesability I doubt it, my car is a poverty spec base model 4x4.

One of the horns failed on mine (which was a 61-plate 4x4 TDi) - looking into it I discovered what others have posted above about their location, and also that there is a normal spec horn, and there is a different spec horn for India 😄.

This was the first job that my local dealer botched - they ended up replacing the good horn and sent it back to me with still only one horn working.  A simple press of the button would’ve discovered the mistake 🙄.

Do you think the dealer would have checked the horn before agreeing the trade in with you ? I have to admit that when buying a second hand car , I have looked at most things but rarely check the horn.

I guess buying second hand Yetis will add an extra "check" to the pre-buying inspection in the future. 👍

Hi J.R. , yes I think I must have the same basic equipment as is fitted to your Yeti, mine is 4 x 4 as well incidentally.

Coincidence or are all 4 x4 's fitted with just a single horn ? Or is it an optional extra, as I suspect, to have dual horns when the car is first ordered up ?

The cost of the horn is so minimal against the cost of a new car that it seems to be penny pinching if that is the case.😞

Dual horns have never been in the Options lists.

So if you only have one it means the other has failed I would understand from your post ?

Presumably.

And to be honest I blow my horn so rarely I wouldn't know what the tone of it was like. I just know it works.
But to repeat, dual horns were never listed in the Options lists.

My UK Jan 2015 Brochure shows that only SE and above models had dual horns:

I doubt it really, but knowing my luck :)  Mostly its a pride thing on my part. I got 2 tiny dents done with PDR, washed and polished it and did  a pretty thorough check before it went in, just 'cause I'd said it was in good nick and I meant it! I suspect they probably didn't even check it other than to make sure the wheels were attached.

Ours had dual horns for sure, but it was a facelift SE L from 2016. Looks like its a possibility yours only has one horn dependant on what model it is.

I guess if you just have one horn and its a bit weedy, you could replace it with something a bit better but you'd probably have to cut the plug off and wire it direct. Just depends how much it bothers you. Years ago I fitted air horns to my old Astra which certainly made it more noticable. The MOT tester nearly deafened himself at one point :)

Yes, , many thanks, I think its plain to see and read that unless its an SE or better  ( if there is such a model ) then a single horn is what to expect , unless specified elsewhere when a car was bought. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks again for the input and I understand about "your kind of luck" ! However, from my understanding , a dealer will just take in a car as it stands and they will then titivate for re-sale, or move it onto someone else to sell.

As for upgrading the horns, I'm becoming to think am I just making too much of a mountain out of a mole-hill ?  Time will tell, watch this space. 😉

I think ours was sold on pretty quickly from the dealers as it was showing as taxed within a week of us trading it in - they did say they were going to put it on the forecourt. The dealer it went to was in Plymouth so you never know, it could have headed further west, if you see a navy blue Yeti LM66OSP round your way then give it a pat for me :)

I'll certainly keep a look out for it ....since buying mine a month or two back, I seem to see so many of them . Never realised what an understated car they are , just wish I'd bought one earlier......

,,,,,will keep my eyes peeled for LM66OSP .👍

Look out for a white and black roofed one, with a Red Dragon sticker on the back, as we are often down at our daughter's in Ludgvan.

Well, I had to check where Ludgvan is , and we certainly come down that way occasionally, altho' we are based in St Mawes, across the bay from Falmouth.

Will keep an eye out for the Red Dragon!

Meanwhile this is our pride and joy. B)

Hi, I interpret that the 'duel tone horn' is one horn, with 2 tones.

I have heard that there is a second horn that is used for the alarm system.

Which I believe is on the opposite side behind front bumper.

I'm new to the Yeti scene, but any dual tone horns I have come across in the past 50 years  have involved two separate units.

As for what noise the alarm makes ?  as of yet I have not heard it ........ so cannot comment.

Further to the dual tone horns, I have just bought these.......

I had sometimes wondered about your Cornish destination as we're often Down West.  We had a meal at The White Hart at the end of September :mmm:
