Mk2 170hp tyre size

Featured Replies

Please help!

My head's about fried looking for a simple answer to tyre size, I know that there's loads of topics on this forum regarding this, there's websites dedicated to the subject, but I simply want to know  - can I put 205 55 16 wheels onto my 2010 mk2 170 superb?

My alloys are a bit gash, the tyres are expensive and the ride is bumpy...there's a set of 16s on fb marketplace for much cheapness right now, so I'd really appreciate a swift and simple answer. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that chimaera. I think that means yes 👍

I currently have them in my 2011 170 combi. Shod with all seasons for the winter. The fuel flap should also show you the sizes.

The fuel flap only shows a small subset of the approved sizes.

If you want the best comfort with 205/55R16 tyres, choose 6J rims rather than the wider 6.5J or 7J rims. This will also help protect the rims from kerbing damage.

According to the charts that I have seen 6Jx16 ET50 is one of the standard rim sizes for the 205/55R16 tyre size on the Skoda Superb MK II.

There are four 6Jx16 steel rims that I have found that would fit the Skoda Superb MK II. These give you a choice of offsets. ET40, ET43, ET48, and ET50. I would suggest either going for the standard ET50 offset, or the ET40 offset.

Every day is a school day.

There are just so many combinations. 👍

ET50 is the Skoda approved offset for 6Jx16, per the charts listed in the thread I linked to above (which are lifted straight from the service manual). For 7Jx16 it's ET45. Going more than a few mm off will make steering behaviour a bit weird as the centre of the contact patch will be in the wrong place for the steering geometry.

The easiest option for going to 16s is visit a scrapyard and grab a set from another Superb or another VAG model that shared the same geometry. You might even get lucky and find a set with decent tyres on it.

According to Wheel-Size.com the standard rims on the Skoda Superb MK II have offsets ranging from ET38 to ET50. That's a 12mm range.

Then that site is wrong. Offsets for Superb range from ET46 to ET50, as taken from Skoda's service manual. End of story.

I think you mean ET45 to ET50.

However, take a look at

8.5Jx18 ET42 rims with 255/35R18 tyres (3.6FSI 256hp)

8.5Jx19 ET42 rims with 245/30R19 tyres (2.0TSI 197hp)

9Jx19 ET38 rims with 255/30R19 tyres (3.6FSI 256hp)

This website also shows ET42 with 8.5J rims, and ET38 with 9J rims on the Skoda Superb MK II

Yes, I realised that it should have been ET45 after I posted but I've been on the road since.

None of those sizes are type approved by Skoda. Also, they are much wider than the 16" sizes discussed further up the thread, meaning the offset has to be that much lower to maintain correct steering geometry.

I have attached a PDF wheels file on Superb II.

If we are talking about 205/55-16 the official ET or offset is 45 or 50. I bought an "official" Skoda 16" alloy wheel set with an ET 45 for winter tyres and I did not like the look if not to say I hated it because the wheels disappeared inside the body by about 2cm.

I looked at VAG 16" wheels and found a Passat wheel set with an ET 37 - Road America - which fill the wheel arch better. They are 7" and they curb as much or little as the 6" rims.

The steering is as neutral as on the 18" summer tyres and as it was on the previous 16" Skoda alloys with an ET45 under both heavy braking and cornering.

You misunderstand my point on offset affecting steering. The offset must change if the rim width changes in order to keep the centre of the tyre's contact patch in the same place relative to the suspension. So the offset required on a 7.5Jx18 will be different to the offset required on a 6Jx16 rim on the same suspension. Both however will be specified by the manufacturer. My point was that if you deviate from the manufacturer's offset specification on a given rim width there will be problems e.g. using a 6Jx16 rim with ET37 instead of ET45, as the tyre's contact patch will now have been moved away from where it should be.
