Coolant for VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all

What type of coolant should I use in the Fabia VRS? Does Comma Xstream G40 from Halfords meet the specifications?

The current coolant is purple stuff.

It doesn't matter as long as it's glycol based rather than OAT, there's a MASSIVE amount of rubbish talked about coolant so the G40 you're looking at will be just fine.

Other way around I thought. Pink/purple etc G12, G12+, G13 OAT based..... Blue = Glycol.

Nope, forget the colour, it's just a dye added to make leaks easier to find under UV and to make it possible to measure concentration using a refractometer.

But OAT is glycol based isn't it? The OAT part is just the additives.

Yep.  Some info about the various VW types here: https://www.ato24.de/en/blog/which-coolant-antifreeze @retro you'll see in the table there that G40 is just the BASF classification of G12++

G13 replaced G12++ a few years back, but the only significant difference is the way it's made, not the product. See post #8 here: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=377135

Anyone know where this places VW Group liking to add a sachet/bag of silicates into the coolant reservoir of some cars?

The idea is said to be constant topping up of the corrosion inhibitors with the "bonus" that if/when these plastic "teabags" open at the sealed seams, the smallish bits of silicates don't move too far, only as far as the heater matrix, so a visit to the workshop is needed for either a flush out or a flush out and new heater matrix.

I believe any VW Group cars that have these silicate bags fitted, have "Mit Silikat" marked on the reservoir!
