My 'new' car - Polo GTi

Featured Replies

Picked this up on Monday night. Great spec and a nippy 1.6 125bhp motor attracted me. Needs a 60k service doing and the alloys need a refurb, but apart from that it's all good. The Xenons are brilliant

Not got the mid-range pull of the Fabia, but it should do the job for a good while and the handling's sublime. And the fact I've bought it outright makes a nice change to monthly car payments...

Great looking car mate. Really have a soft spot for these, so much nicer than newer polos.

I just posted about changing my Vrs, one major plus would be no repayments.

Nice car, great to be payment free.:)

Nice car.

Great engine that little 1.6, they're so revvy.

I love the seats in them too, with the slightly naff but still cool no.1 on them! And they hug you properly on corners.

Nice motor! Any interior pics?

Looks good. I can recommend Josh's forum to you which can be found here: http://www.uk-polos.net/

Nice cars.My mother has an x reg 1.4v 16v.Once considered one of the sporty ones, one down from that GTI I think, with all the kit.

Only 100bhp and its nippy.125 should be a lot nippier still.A good buy

I was looking at one myself before going with the Nissan. But your right it is nice not to be owing any money on the car.

Yeah, I saw a few of your posts on UK-Polos Ross. Suppose the Primera's a bit more family friendly though...

When its down to nuts and bolts its just a hell of alot more car for less money so went for the Nissan.

Plus I hate doing them naffing pedal boxes on the Polo...bah!

Great choice of car!

Now get some 25mm spacers for the rear and some coilovers:

B)

Make sure the pedal box recal has been done and that you get a cam belt set and the tensioners (as well as the water pump) replaced asap if they haven't been already.

There's a place in North London that is very good at refurbing the GTi wheels... Can't remember what they're called at the moment though. Sorry.

Oh, and if it starts running rough, get a new set of plug leads as they are prone to dying.

 lovely car

cracking bomb proof little motor. nice buy.

Love these cars!

From what i remember reading about them when they were new, they WERE the car the MK4 Golf GTi wanted to be!

Great choice mate.

more picks please ;)

Cheers for all the compliments guys!

Josh - wondered how long it would take you reply - DON'T start to tempt me! :D

If you could recall the refurb place that would be great. Do you reckon 'The Wheel Clinic' in Sheffield where you got your Design 90s done up would be worth a try?

Pedal box recall has been done. I checked that before I bought, so thanks for the sticky on UK-Polos! Belt and pump will be done when it goes for service. Any recommendations on decent independents, as I'm not particularly keen to pay a VW dealer £400 for JUST the cambelt change  JBS?

How far you willing to travel?

I can certainly confirm it rides and handles better than the Mk4 as quite a few of my friends have them - roll is virtually non-existant and it just keeps gripping :D Seems to me like VW got it spot on with supension setup and damping.

It's a bit grubby currently, inside and out, but weather permitting this weekend I'll give it a proper going over and post some pics up - you'll have to ignore the wheels for now though, as the laquer is shot on all 4!

If it's gonna be a top job then I'm not too fussed - you know a man don't you? ;)

Preferably I'd like a polished rim to the wheels. Does anyone know if this can be achieved without having to reapply laquer, and therefore avoiding it cracking again within a couple of years?

There's also the issue of whether I have to leave the car at a place for a while - I'd imagine 4 split rims could take a place at least a couple of days? Option B is to borrow a set of alloys to run on until they're sorted. Do you know if the Lupo GTi standard alloys are the same fitment? (I have a mate with one who'll be putting his summer alloys on soon)

But open to suggestions and recommendations at the moment

Steve

You could do alot worse than go here if you dont mind the traveling..

Just my 10p.

And I cant see why Lupo alloys wouldnt fit.

Steve

No, thats for the cambelt etc for your service.

Alloys wise a friend in Leicester did mine for me.

  • Author

Yeah, realised that right after I'd posted!

I'd travel to get the alloys done as well, if you reckon he'd sort them for me.

Steve

nice car mate  both my mum and gayle had a polo gti. great cars, i was impressed. when all clean it will look brilliant.

the alloys are a complete pain, my mum managed to get a full set, brand new from the dealer under warranty. common problem!

enjoy :)

JBS know this motor inside and out (they did all sorts to mine), so I'd have no problem at all recommending them.

With regards the wheels, I would take them to somewhere like spit and polish, or the place in London that Chris off the polo forum took his 16" ones... They came back looking brand new. He's in Hong Kong right now, or else I'd ask him the name of the place!

I'm not trying to tempt you, but even a set of H&R 35mm or Eibach 50mm springs on the standard dampers makes an amazing difference to the car's handling... You think it's good now!!!

Trust me about the rear spacers too... The car handles SO much better with them on and they're a proper cheap mod!

I often wish I could have afforded to keep mine as a weekend car... I really did love it to bits.
