Front Wipers Stopped

Featured Replies

Evening All, 1st time posting :)

Have a 2010 Fabia Greenline 1.4 Diesel and have it about 2 months and its a great car...

Today out of the blue, the front wipers have stopped working completely for some strange reason.

I've checked through the forums and did as suggested and replaced Fuse 44 (Front Window Wiper) - but not luck.

I've seen it mentioned a few times about replacing Fuse 15 (Headlight Cleaning System)
In our case that would be Fuse 56 but that is not applicable on this car.

The rear wiper still works fine, the front wiper washer still sprays water but no life from the front wipers themselves

I thought I would have heard something try to tick over, but don't hear any sound at all...

Anyone any ideas what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Back Again

I'm no mechanic,

But the fact there is no sound at all when switching on the front wipers at this point I can only put it down to one of two things

1) Electrical issue

2) Wiper Motor gone

Garage where I bought it (2nd hand) gave a 3month warranty so wondering would this be covered under warranty 😟
Only problem is they are a 55mile drive away and its wet/raining so technically not safe to drive.

Best phone first before travelling to visit them.

Maybe they are not interested or maybe they will want to do the right thing and sort out your wipers.

In short, yes it will be included under the warranty. It will also be covered by the "Sale of goods act" Which states that the item sold should be "Fit for purpose intended".

This means that everything should work as intended, otherwise it is NOT fit for purpose... The wipers are supposed to wipe, so they should! Any malfunction should be rectified by the seller or if agreed, they will pay the costs involved in having it rectified. A car dealership will most likely want to try fixing it first, to cut costs. They may however, agree to pay you to get it done, to save travelling etc as you might expect a replacement vehicle whilst they are depriving you of yours.

Contact them, tell them the issue and ask them what they will do. Suggest a loan vehicle as this may suit them or suggest they foot the bill from your local Skoda dealer. (I would forget any other local repairer, in this instance). If they deny any wrong doing, mention the warranty, the sale of goods act etc and mention trading standards officers. This usually gets the ball rolling but be polite. FIRM, but polite. Keep a record of any calls/emails etc until you have had a successful outcome. If they are a decent dealer, they will be more then happy to help as this often sets them up for a second sale, when time comes to upgrade.

Do all this as soon as you can as it is YOUR responsibility to inform them of any issue. You can't really wait to the last day of the warranty, then act and say they have been non-working for x- amount of weeks...

Thanks for replies...

Good news is garage where we purchased it would like to fix it themselves but are willing to work with our mechanic as long as it's not too costly.

So, our mechanic has said

it's not the fuse

It's not the wiper motor, turns out there is no power getting to the motor and is being tested again today but mechanic reckons its a bad wire or problem with control module.

Fingers cross not a big job

Cheers,

Paul

It's sounding like the relay inside the Onboard Supply Control Unit.  Very expensive to buy a whole new unit, cheap to buy a secondhand one and swap that in (would need to match coding with VCDS, but that's easy). Even cheaper to replace the relay if you have the (desoldering/soldering) skills. Here's a little mini-guide for the mk1., Early mk2 may be similar: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/473170-wiper-relay-replacement/?tab=comments#comment-5311069

Cheers for that info Wino,

Forgot to mention yesterday our mechanic did manage to some power to the motor at one point of testing so is going to persist a bit more today and hopefully will know more later and hopefully some good news 😖🤞

I just remembered having an issue a few years back where the wipers stopped. The repairer managed to get them going again and this was something to do with its control module, not the motor. They managed to clean up the corroded terminals, which must have been not allowing the power to get through. Worked well ever since but they suggested if they did fail again, it may be better to replace the unit as the corrosion may have got too major to clean up and re-use.

I am thinking they did a good enough job of removing the corrosion so as not to have it continue to wreck the terminals fully!

(Thanks, guys).

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Got the car back to garage,  they had a VW mechanic do a full works and diagnostics on the fuses and control module and these were all fine, all outputs from module were also fine.

After everything it turned out to be a bad earth or problem with earthing?

Once re-earthed this fixed the issue, it also fixed another random issue that was effecting the digital fuel gauge on the dash (where it would randomly drop to empty)

Cheers

Paul
