I'm in the market for a diesel VRS and would prefer an auto for the drive I have for work. However reading the DSG related threads has me spooked and a local independent dealer is telling to keep away from them, although he has a manual vrs to sell me I'm taking his advice with a pinch of salt. 

 

I've seen a few models around, all with over 100K miles on them but one in particular has a the gearbox rebuilt 2 years ago by a local VAG specialist. 

 

I'm always wary of problematic trends (320d timing chain for example) as you only ever really hear the worst case scenario stories (not trying to make light of anyone who''s had problems with their DSG). 

 

Thoughts? 

The wet clutch 6sp dsg in the Oct 2vRS is pretty reliable with proper servicing.  Oil and filter change of the transmission  every 40k to remove contaminants.

 

That is not to day there has never been a fault, if you are unlucky, a DSG will be more expensive to put right than a manual....

Seems like the Local Independent Dealer knows nothing about 6 speed wet clutch DSG's. 

They just need the scheduled oil changes.

If the Independent Dealer has been stung in the past taking a trade in or buying bad ones at auction then that is just what can happen.

I believed all the bad hype of the wet clutch DSG’s until I had a mate that bought one, now the reason this one view changed my mind was because he is an animal, the car was hardly mint already, it was a cat C, airbags deployed, the DMF rattled from the moment he bought it (against my advice) at about 140k.

 

it was an early mk5 golf 1.9tdi dsg, he drove it like he stole it every day, he filled it up with petrol so many time he actually learnt how to fix it himself 😂 he did have the gearbox serviced twice, never bothered to cure the noisy dmf’s and eventually the car was driven into a house with near 200k on the clock because the brakes failed, as far as I’m aware he never had any issues with the gearbox or the engine the whole time of ownership.

 

from that point onwards ive never been worried about the wet clutch DSG’s 😂

I have a VRS with DSG and it’s done 150k with no issues on the gearbox. It’s been serviced when it should and it’s an extremely good gearbox and you can’t even feel the changes.

Hopefully people trading in come January will give me more options
