Strange knocking

Featured Replies

My 2007 Mk2 has developed a knocking coming from the front passenger well, it sounds like someone wants to come in.

After a while it stops, strange but its a definate knocking but not to loud.

Any Ideas please???

If you put it this way, you should let IT in and settle the matter.

Could be drop links but you'd expect that to stay?

I had a very mysterious knock from an old Mk2 Golf I had. It was a really loud knock that you could feel. First developed when drivign on the M-Way which was worrying.  Called AA and htey jacked up car and "drove" it with the LHS wheel off the ground. No knock. Got home OK and knocking started again. Had outer CV joint replaced. Knocking went then returned. Had inner CV joint replaced. Knocking went then returned. Very odd and costing lots of money.

Knocking went for a while and I quickly sold the car cheaply.

My later theory was that the crown wheel int he diff was missing some teeth and everytime the car was fixed, one wheel was turned around a lot so the missing teeth bit didn't matter. After a while the missing teeth section would come into play and cause the knocking.

Never got to the bottom of it but saw may old car driving around for many years after I sold it.

As theorys go thats right up there with the worst of them 🙁

Yeah, I know! Bust after elimiating all the possible problems then the only thing left was the gearbox diff. It was a horrible banging noise that caused the car to judder.

It could have been the diff, I have had just that, rebuilt it finding nothing wrong except perhaps preload and the noise never re-appeared, it was the bit about the teeth not being used that caused my sarcastic reaction, on a steering rack at full lock or a window regulator at full open position maybe but not a differential, as soon as a wheel rotates one turn all the CW&P gear teath are used, as soon as you turn a corner all the planet gear teeth are used.

The latter when damaged can cause some hairy moments on roundabouts or turning in to a parking space.

just to make clear the knocking is not loud and it definately comes from the area of the front passenger foot well.

it seems to settle after driving a while.

is it worse when it's cold?
does the noise go away when then engine is warmed up after driving a while?
Also would be helpful to know some more about you car .. engine? / petrol or diesel / how many miles
