Help!!

I am getting conflicting advice on what winter tyres to get. I bought my Octavia scout when I lived down south. I now live in the Highlands of Scotland where winters are more severe. Dealer down south said 16” wheels with 205/55/16 tyres. Dealer in Scotland says 16” wheels with 215/60/16 tyres. Tyre companies when I input car and model say 17” wheels and 225/50/17 98V XL tyres (Unitoyal) or 225/50/17 94H (Pirelli).

I am struggling to know who to believe! Anyone out there been through this before and got useful advice?

The Scout has different sizes to regular Octavias, could be causing the problem.

From the book, list of approved sizes for the 184 Scout are:

205/50 R17 89V 6J x 17 et45 x

205/50 R17 89V 6J x 17 et48 x

205/55 R16 91V 6J x 16 et48 x

205/55 R16 91V 6J x 16 et50 x

205/55 R17 91V 6J x 17 et48 x

205/60 R16 92V 6J x 16 et48 x

225/50 R17 94V 7J x 17 et45

All with an x can take snow chains

16" or 17" are down to choice, nothing wrong with either.

16" will be cheaper for tyres and a bit more comfort

17" will drive better

Current thinking is wider is better for winter tyres (Same width as summer tyres) so 225 may be better for that

If you think you might use/need proper snow chains then you will need the narrower 205 for clearance.

Have not heard of a 215 listed for a MK3 Octavia so I would say your Dealer is wrong.

That is very helpful flybynite, thanks. Snow chains are definitely on the shopping list for winter trips to the Alps.

Then my recommendation would be either

205/60 R16 92V 6J x 16  or

205/55 R17 91V 6J x 17

Hope it helps

It definitely does. Many thanks.

I appreciate that my tyres are ‘all season’ rather than the ‘full winter’ you’re asking about, but just regarding your size query, earlier this week I had my Scout fitted with a set of 225/50 R17 (98V) and they feel good on the car.

But that size is not approved for use with standard snow chains as the O.P was asking.

Doesn't mean you might not find chains to work with the 225 size, but if I  were using full chains I would not risk my brake pipes and go with the narrower tyre size.

Thanks for clarifying and I’m with you now. I just had another read of the first post and can’t see where the OP asked about snow chains. I can see they came up later in the thread though.

Good info in the list of sizes you provided, especially the ‘x’ being snow chain suitable if I ever need them.
