ADAS = WTF !??

Recommended Posts

Hi,

You may recall I posted recently about the shopping trolley damage to the rear passenger door of my MK3 Superb and my concerns as to the potential success of this repair, given its location, right on the "swage" line.

Anyway, I bit the bullet and had the repair undertaken at a local "Chips Away" franchise who have a done a fantastic job - the repair is completely invisible ! (See attached photos). - I'd be happy to share the company details if that is o.k. - the location of which is in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

However.... I received a follow up email advising that I should have an "ADAS recalibration" following this work.

I have never heard of this.  Could someone please advise what it is and if you think this is required please.

Please consider, the repair was only a minor dent removal which involved a "pin and pull" / filler and respray solution.

Many thanks and I look forward to your replies.

It's bum-covering by the repairer IMHO. @unclerichy has it right - ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and refers to the camera and sensors (possibly others as well). My advice would be to drive the car and check that everything is doing what you expect. If so, don't waste your money. Terrific job on the repair by the looks of it:thumbup:.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for the advice - I noticed the wing mirror blind spot warnings were working o.k. and I'll check out the parking sensors and Adaptive Cruise Control next time I go out.

Agreed about the repair - I’m now £200 lighter, but they have done a cracking job!  In addition to the main dent on the “crease line”, the area above the impact was dished-out and the area below was dished-in.

It was dark when I picked it up, (they had the car from 8am to 4.30 pm), so couldn’t check out the paint match properly until the following morning.

I’ve literally studied it from every angle and with reflections from the house roof as a guide to the “straightness” of the repair – no ripples at all – a true invisible repair !

I can now sleep soundly at night !.....

Cheers again.

😨 £200, to remove this dent !?! OMG !!!

I paid 'only' €60 to remove a similar dent (also on an edge line) on my wife's Audi Q3 one month ago (for same top class result).

£200 is almost what we would have to pay with a classic body repair work!

Body repairers must be all millionaire in the UK with such prices!?!

Blimey 60 Euros is very good value for money !

I emailed various companies for a few quotes, the cheapest being £90, but this was a "paint-less dent removal" option.  The companies offering this solution, were upfront and suggested the repair would be around 85% invisible.

I therefore went for a full, pin-pull / filler / respray option which resulted in the photo's.

The most expensive option was £350 !!

Oh Well I'm delighted with the results, which I guess is the main issue.

Cheers

@Roottootemoot Yes, VAT has been paid. The work has been done using paintless dent removal technique. Thus the guy did it in only 15-20mn. This means ~180-240€/h

Note: There may be also a difference on average manpower costs between France and UK...

Someone with a low hourly rate and just charging for their time is good, if you go to them. So turn up and they use their skills, tools, insurance etc / so overheads.

With a service provided of anykind where a Trades person travels to you to do the job then it is not 15-20 minutes unless they live in the same property to you or maybe next door.

That is where a 'Dents away' / ' Chips away' type 'kerb side repair' business (franchise) might have a minimum £75 charge.

We went to him, so no travel to be charged. Additionally, the dent was on wheel arch, so with very easy access, and almost no disassembly /reassembly time.

Who did the job for that money, and was the taxes paid on that.

Whoever did it must be independently wealthy or live a very frugal life on not much income.

My local Renault dealer (also in France) takes €80 to remove any dents or bump if no paintjob is required... I agree with him, your repair man is rich ! :D

I guess the original point of the OP is now lost in time, but FWIW I would have been happy to pay a couple of hundred quid for the repair he got, at least judging by the pictures. The chances are that this was the only job the repairer had that day and there is no guarantee he had another job the next day (or the one after that). If we aren't prepared to pay for a quality service or finish, then we can't complain when there isn't a quality option available in the future. Try buying a decent suit or travelling from any airport outside Heathrow if you don't believe me.

That crease line is the most difficult part which takes time.

My wife had five dents taken out of the leading edge of the bonnet on her Mokka. £60 and the guy phone me up to apologise that he was unable to completely remove one of the dents to his satisfaction, I could not see where there was an imperfection to merit his concerns. He is an old school type who came recommended. That is priceless.

I think that your Renault dealer has to 'sponge' Carlos Gohsn's recent misappropriations of funds... 😂 Try another PTR specialist... Note: I can give you the address of mine (only ~50 from Paris. Close to Meaux). ;)

Note: I'm usually hard to please concerning car repairs (whatever mechanical or body repair). Thus, as many of you I don't have any problem with paying a little more to get quality works. However, if for the same results I can pay less (VAT included), it suits me too!
