95 PS Engine any good?

Featured Replies

I'm about to order my next car and and quite fancy the new Scala, and for reasons I won't bore you with am drawn to the 95PS engine, but I'm really struggling to find any decent reviews.

Has anyone got a 95PS Scala and can you give me your honest opinion as to what it's like to live with day to day?

I'm a very steady driver and generally drive with only myself in the car.

I tend to drive between 60-65 on the motorway and don't race away from lights etc - is it okay for general steady pace driving?

I have driven MPI 80, TSI 95, & TSI 110/115 versions of this triple in a variety of Ibizas, Aronas and Toledos.

The 95 is by far the nicest - it has enough torque to manage with less manual gears than the 110, and though it isn't really very quick, it needs so many less gearchanges than the more powerful one, and is a far more pleasant drive; even in the heavier Arona SUV it seemed to have sufficient power at all times.

I did a couple of hundred miles on A and B roads with the 95 and liked it far more than the 110 (which I own unfortunately).

The 110/115 manual often seems to be in the wrong gear owing to its narrow torque band. However to be fair this can be mitigated by ordering the DSG.

The 80 is so gutless its dangerous in my view.

Over to you.

Thank you, that's encouraging.

It would be the manual I'd go for.

What sort of MPG could I expect? I tend to get the advertised combined (in old money) figures, as i drive fairly long journeys - is the 95 frugal?

I only have long term knowledge of the 110 in a Toledo (Rapid).

Mine does about 52 mpg all summer long as we don't do local journeys. Winter 49-50.

Figures reflect AC always on. Stop-Start too but that has no effect unless town driving.

The earlier generation Rapid was noted on Briskoda as more economic with 86 PS + 5 speeds than 105 PS + 6 Speeds, but it's a fact that modern tiny petrol turbos wont get close to the advertised EU figures - mine has a pre-2017 combined EU figure of 61, so I'm some way off.

The new testing standards actually do seem more honest though.

Scala shows 50-51 mpg for the petrols which is just what I get from a very similar engine.

These are the official WLTP figures of the engines with a GPF.

They might not be accurate but they are the only figures that can be advertised.

Hey buddy, I'm actually placing an order for the 70Kw (95HP) Scala as well, I haven't seen any reviews for it online, but it's a nice little turbocharged 1.0L engine that has plenty of power for its size and weight.
