1.6Tdi Will not start or run

Featured Replies

I have a problem with my Octavia 1.6Tdi. Over the past few weeks / months the fuel economy keeps getting worse, now averaging <40mpg, which is pretty crap for any diesel.

Next thing that happened is occasionally it would stall (always at a busy junction!) and be very difficult to restart - usually with very erratic idle and refusing to rev at all with no power - accompanied by stacks of grey smoke from the exhaust. Predictably as soon as it goes near a garage it behaves perfectly - according to mechanic there are a few MAF sensor related codes but nothing really specific. It did this same sequence again a couple of days ago - I managed to get the car home, but now it doesn't start at all. I fitted a new battery and MAF - still same issue. Car will fire up but idles erratically and dies after 3-5 seconds - does not respond to throttle opening. I have one amber warning light (steering wheel, which I think is the airbag? Appeared with new battery).

Its almost as if fuel pump is providing too much fuel all the time - Anyone out there experienced similar symptoms or know what the possible cause could be?

Over-fuelling consistently makes me think MAF or lambda. Unplug the MAF and see if that improves things. If it does, fit a new genuine MAF.
