Problem with front two electric windows

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I know there are a few threads on problems with electric windows on this model of the Octavia however my situation is a bit different.

When I bought my used Octavia MK2 2012 it came with a power window fault, 30 Amp fuse was blown for the windows and I replaced it.

The passenger window started working perfectly, the drivers side started to work but stopped working after a few seconds. It decided to want to work again and so I managed to close it.

The fuse then blew, decided to put a 35 amp fuse to verify which blew instantly.

I suspect there is a short occurring in the mechanism of the drivers side window but it may simply be the master switch shorting.

Anyone had the same problem?

All help is welcome and greatly appreciated

(My Octavia only has the front two windows as electric)

If you suspect the switch on the drivers side door panel then you can use another way to tell the window to open or close.

Press and hold the door lock switch on the centre console. Doors lock to raise all the windows and doors open to lower all the windows. You can also do the same using the key in the door handle - turn and hold the key.

Your assumption of a trapped wire may be correct but before removing the door card to look, check for a broken wires in the rubber snake between the body and the door.

There is no master switch or relay as the commands are electronic.

Thank you for your helpful suggestion.

I would like to try your method however every time I try to put a a fuse in for the electric windows it blows instantly, will this work without a fuse in for the electric windows?

Go straight to checking the wiring in the rubber bellows between door and A-pillar.

Okay I guess I will check the wiring first for any physical signs of damage.

I did remember that the first time I put a new fuse in, it popped after closed the boot

I think you may find a short between the main 12V feed coming from that fuse, and something else, possibly the main brown earth.

I can't see much else causing a 30 or 35 Amp fuse to blow instantly.

I am a complete beginner when it comes to car electrics, this is my first car so I may take it to a auto electrician for a diagnosis after I've tried some light tinkering

This is the wiring diagram for power windows, I assume that I have to check the wire B19-1 as its a ground wire

Does anyone know where that wire is?

The thick red/white wires come from the fuse that's blowing to each front door module.

The most likely place for that to be broken or damaged is in the rubber bellows between the car body and each front door, in the hinge area.

Since the driver's door is usually opened and closed most, look at that one first.

The rubber can usually be detached at the car body end and pulled back towards the door to allow inspection of the wires inside.

Would someone with a similar age mk2 Octy please tell this person how to gain access, please?

I don't have personal experience on this platform.

Much appreciated Pete, I'm getting to understand the diagram slowly

I did watch a video on the window regulator removal of this Octy model so I think I have an idea on how to pull the rubber back for a quick inspection. I might take off the drivers side window switch and see any physical abnormality that might be present.

I'm going to get an electrician as a last resort as they're a bit pricey and as a student I must save where I can.

Love all the support that I have received so quickly

The switch won't be causing the fuse to blow, it is wired with thin wires that carry tiny signal currents only.

From memory it unclips like on my current Yeti  which is the same platform, getting it apart is easy, the challenge is getting it back together.

Hello,

An update on this problem, I've disconnected then connected the battery and put a fuse in for the front two windows (30A) and the passenger side window seems to be working flawlessly now. The drivers side however is not, there's a sound of cables winding and unwinding coming through and the window is not moving at all. I suspect the window regulator is packed in and needs replacing.

I am confident that the motor is fine as I can hear it working.
