Skoda Octavia to commute

Featured Replies

Hello.

I commute to my work every day, 100km.

And I soon need to look for a new car.

Diesel and automatic transmission is requirement.

I have been looking on Skoda Octavia.

But what is the best engine on the diesel side?
Any problems to look up for?

I checked out a Volvo V60 before. But major engine problems(high oil consumption, cracked engine block, EGR problems, balance shaft problems etc.) did I turned my back on these cars.

Good comfort and also a better sound system is important for me.

What equipment package should I look for? Is the RS model an option?

Thank you!

For those requirements your only real choice is the 2.0tdi as the auto box is the well regarded dq250 with wet clutch pack. The 1.6tdi comes with the dq200 dry clutch gearbox which may be ok but has a worse track record. Plus the 2.0 is a much better engine to drive with minimal impact on economy. The rs tdi is a good option with the independent rear suspension rather than the torsion beam in the standard car. I have the standard setup but now with B6 shocks and pro-kit springs makes it so much more controlled although not as absorbing of big bumps at slow speeds. Just did my first long distance trip today on this setup and nowhere near as tired after than I was before. Even as standard it's a very comfy cruiser.

Edit:

As for sound systems. My elegance (now se-l) has Amundsen mib2 which sounds great for most things. Some RS's in the UK have the same system. Not sure about other markets.

auto wise depending on mileage I'd be looking for everdence of an oil change on the dsg box. Every 64,000km for the gear box.

I'd also be looking for the service history.

Avoid the 1.6tdi and DQ200 box. 2.0TDi and DQ250 is better but make sure the gearbox has had the correct services.

If your commute is high speed work then make sure you have an extended test drive. The Mk3 with it's torsion beam suspension and lack of sound insulation is not a match made in heaven.

Audio wise the standard speaker setup is poor, the canton is OK at lower speeds.

The noisy interior and poor audio made my high speed commute a chore.

Thank you for your reply.

I travel 50% on the highway.

Poor sound insulation dosent sounds that good.

And also poor audio.

Maybe Skoda Octavia is not a good option for me.

Can you stretch to a Superb?

They really are a class above when it comes to motorway use.
