Noisy tapping sound when revved

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I wonder if someone could offer some advice please, I have just purchased a 2006 Fabia VRS with 143k on the clock, it has had a new clutch and DMF in 2016 and shortly after has been sitting doing nothing, needless to say the inside has gone mouldy and so on but this has been sorted. The problem i have is there is a loud tapping sound coming form the engine, definitely sounds like the top end of the engine. It has service history up until 100k, after that nothing. When i first purchased the car it sounded fine for a couple of miles so didn't pick up on anything, it has a cone filter on which made it sound horrible so put it back to a standard box and paper filter, there is also a receipt for a stage one remap back in 2015. I have changed the oil and filter, I used eurocarparts Triple QX oil for PD engines 505.01. This didn't make any difference sadly. I also added wynn's diesel cleaner to clean the injectors thinking it might be that but no change. The noise is almost gone on tickover, there is a judder in idle every few seconds though, when i rev past 2k and higher you can really hear the deep tapping sound, the harder you accelerate the louder it is and its also there when you come of the throttle which to me ruled out the injectors. Any idea's would be greatly received, acceleration is good but i guess i would say lumpy and not as fast as it was when i first drove it for a couple of miles. When i changed the oil, (suction through the dip stick) i did notice some gunky thick oil as it emptied. Wondering if someone used the wrong oil and whether i should either do a engine flush or perhaps use some hydraulic lifter treatment?

Please don't use any snake oil in a PD engine, magic jizz will not fix a blocked lifter.

It may clear with use now you've changed the oil.

Hi Sepulchrave, yeah i was wondering if it's going to be a waste of money and time, as far as i've read doing an engine flush is apparently a big no no, would that also be the advice even though i might have a blocked hole on the lifter? Thanks for replying so fast

You can't flush a lifter because there's no flow through it, you can remove the cam and replace all the lifters but it's a lot of work just to get rid of an irritating noise which might clear up all by itself.
