Windscreen misting

Featured Replies

There used to be a post on here with many tales of how bad the Octy was for misting up overnight, I've searched and can no longer find it.

So here's starting another, maybe make you laugh, maybe you share my frustration.

Without a doubt the Octy is the worst car I've known for this.  When I think about it probably only eating a bag of chips has caused misting in previous cars... oh yeah, and that 😉

Here's what mine looked like after being started 15 minutes, temperature only -1.5C, demist on, external glass treated with deicer/scraped.

That's ice I had to scrape from the INSIDE!

30 minutes before I could drive.

Out of curiosity, if you respond please say if your windscreen was previously replaced, mine was and it may be a clue.

Yup. Mine's the same. Sometimes it's clear until I drive off then it mists up!!!

Mine was the same I checked everything that was suggested and nothing fixed it. Only cure I found was keeping two dehumidifier bags in the car to absorb the moisture

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-accessories/interior-car-accessories/air-dry-classic-car-dehumidifier?_br_psugg_q=dehumidifier

You’ll need to dry them out every so often but they work very well.

I started having electrical gremlins with my car and I’m sure it was linked to the condensation and icing inside the windscreen as I had rust under dash board around the metal by the fuse box on the drivers side and that is where the can bus is too.

Reminds me of my old Mazda 6 - that had a serious water problem but then again, the passenger footwell was a swimming pool :D

Misting issues seem to have avoided my Octavia and it's normally fine. If I do need to demist, it's normally clear by the time I've scrapped the windows.

Might be worth trying to find out where the water is, how it's getting there and if it's avoidable?

There's no apparent leak and like Golf-Fiend stated it's not uncommon for the screen to mist completely in seconds when otherwise clear so I'm thinking A/C evaporator problem.

@MicMac @Golf-Fiend - Have you considered demisting the interior with the heater set cold?

No, I leave climatronic on 20C.

I usually set the vents to the Footwell setting and turn the fan on max before using Screen Demist setting. It does help a bit. Also setting to Footwell and Recirculate before stopping the car for the night.

Mine has improved quite a lot since I have made sure that water that was previously getting trapped by the door seals at the bottom inside, can now trickle out.

I have made little gaps in the door seal at the bottom, on the two doors where i found water sitting on top of the seals.

Here it is. It tends to get opened back up this time of year, every year.

It is an Octavia trait, you can take steps to reduce it but once it's in you'll struggle to eliminate it...

That's the one, thanks.

That is not right, I am sure you have water trapped in the car somewhere. I drive all the time with climatronic on auto high with the temp set to 19 and auto recirculation. Sometimes on a very cold/humid morning it may need a few minutes to demist the front screen but once the engine is warm and I am driving it never mists up whatsoever, even in heavy rain. I never ever touch the climatronic controls either except sometimes the temperature. If I'm feeling particularly cold or warm.

It is right I am afraid. Not every Octavia is the same when it comes to water tightness.

There are just too many tales of woe across this forum over several years for it to be simply due to careless placement of wet clothes / dogs / kids etc.

I've had this problem too, turned out to be the Pollen Filter needed changing.

Also check the filter surrounding is sealing, a friends Leon was a nightmare for condensation, his pollen filter surround was split and wasn't sealing. Check under your carpets for signs of water leak.

Found out I had water leaking past the hatch back seal. There are two drain holes in the wrong position in the rubber.

A couple of extra holes in the bottom of the rubber has solved the issue I had with traces of water in the boot and has cure 80% of my misting issues.

  • 3 weeks later...

Try putting cat litter in a heavy denier stocking (sounds weird I know) tying a knot in the open end and leaving that on the dash overnight.

The cat litter should draw the moisture out of the air and prevent misting.

Same here, only on my drivers door instead.... and made two small gaps in between the seal and the door as it was getting trapped on top of the seal.

I've tried it..........no improvement. Not sure if the sock i used was too thick tho.

Some pictures showing the cuts in the boot and doors. I have had the issue for years and agree they both have standing water when opened. Rather cut once than make a botch of it. Any one able to please ?

Definitely try a ladies stocking, not a sock.

No need to raid the wife's knicker drawer chaps, you can pick up proper moisture traps from the pound shop!

I have one in each of the rear door pockets.

I can't say I notice a difference as they only hold about a soft drink can worth and need replacing every 3 months or so.

Still, any moisture is better than none!

  • 2 years later...

it is the time of the year again for misting issues to start up again🙄

I must say (touch wood) my 2012 1.4 TSI has been fine for this compared to my previous 2007 1.9. On the previous one I had a problem where the rubber boot seal was full of water and then a leaky washer pipe. Dried it completely out but always still suffered with issues.

Whether it's the petrol Vs diesel (faster warm up and so heat coming out quicker?) or it's a pre/post facelift climate control thing (some differences with how much air and where it comes out)?

Or maybe the climate is different here in Germany? But don't feel it's that different. But maybe less rain overall? Just looked this up. Germany average of 700mm per year Vs UK 1220mm.
