5W/40 or 5W30 oil

Featured Replies

Somebody on my local fb group is moving house and gave me a nearly full 5L  container of oil.

it is 5W30.

I have always bought 5W40

so is it ok to use the 5W 30

Thanks

Different manufacturers have slightly different ways of grading oil I find. However it has to meet the VAG 507.00 etc to be able to be used in your car. Quantum call it long life 3 5w/30 from memory.

Thanks for your input

I think I'll contact Skoda.

Don't want to wreck the engine!

@richard999  That will be an interesting conversation once the person asks a man or woman who knows.

Use it at the next oil and filter service if it is to VW504 / 507.   But i would not with a 1.8TSI which has not had any issues..

So if your engine is the 1.8 TSI then the recommended oil is 5w 30 Full Synthetic III (Long Life) to VW 504 / 507 for fixed or Variable Servicing.

(If a TDI you must use VW507 for Fixed or Variable Servicing.  That is required.)

But.

Considering that VW / Skoda care not about wrecked TSI's.

The VW502 so 5w 40 Full Synthetic is a very good oil to use if changing oil at 10,000 miles or sooner.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

So basically if you have VW504 / 507   5w 30 FS III in the engine now or anyone else has use the same for topping up..

For the future at a Oil & Filter service maybe use 5w 40 FS & do fixed services.

Long Life OIls, short lived Euro 5 TSI's just VW never say that...
