Soft Dampers - Bilstein B6 anyone?

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI manual with conventional suspension. The car is very comfortable with suspension is very very soft, to the point that I think it affects the stability and safety of the car.

This winter holidays I was travelling with my family fully loaded when in a downhill corner with perfect tarmac but with some road ondulations ESP activated scaring the hell of out me and my family. Speed was maybe too high for the road (110-120 kmh on a fast downhill right corner) and my guess is that the ondulation of the road + car heavily loaded + softness of the suspension confused the ESP and car entered mode “let’s save this man from himself”. If this happens while overtaking another car I would have had an accident.

I think that a good cure would be a set of Bilsteins B6 with the original springs. Is anyone running this setup here? What are your experiences with it?

Slow down a bit or maybe a lot, then you can enjoy the soft comfortable suspension of the Skoda Superb without having to firm things up. Next time, try 80-90km/h on the straight and 60km/h round the corners...it's much safer.

That’s a good answer, I’m not a street racer at all, all I want is to improve the handling of the car. My father in law has a VW Passat Rline with a much stiffer suspension even in Comfort mode. Very comfortable but stiff at the same time with less “rebounds” when driving over bumps or crests. That’s what I’m looking for.

Our other car (fun car) is a 2006 Mini with a Eibach Pro kit (eibach and Bilsteins B8). It’s very very stiff, really fun on B roads. I don’t want that for the Superb as it is our family car, I just want a better chassis control.

@Esseesse200 has modified his suspension IIRC, he may be able to help

I’m on H&R on a sportline estate and it’s made a massive difference. At some point I will go to koni special shocks which is what they used to call fsd (frequency selective damping) had them in a couple of cars and they are very good. Fiat fit them as standard to their 595 Abarth And punto esseesse (used to have one) and the Fiat 500x cross plus (wife has one)
this is mine on the H&R.

That is just H&R springs or springs and also dampers? I don’t want to modify ride height, I think that just dampers would do the job... I must say it looks awesome!

This is on lowering springs with standard dampers at the moment.

I too would like a simple solution to a) keeping stock ride height, b) stiffening things & improving handling and c) a solution that doesn't muck up DCC

I'm all ears for answers guys & girls!

I'm not sure if DCC is the adaptative dampers.

In my case I have conventional (and crappy) dampers so my plan is to replace them with some fresh Bilsteins B6 and the original springs so ride heights remains untouched. These dampers are stiffer than the original. A friend of mine has them installed in a SUV and the feel is just great.

I am wondering if anyone is running this setup in the Superb.

DCC is the adaptive/dynamic dampers/shocks.

if u have DCC, ideally u get shocks that compatible with the DCC system in the Superb.  these r very rare, and very very expensive.
or u get non-DCC shocks n get dummy sensors that trick the car into thinking it still has DCC shocks.  this will affect the various driving modes.

u cannot complete code out DCC from the car as its an integral part of the cars electronics.

if u don't have DCC - happy sailing with replacement shocks :)

I'm on H&R the same as Esseesse200, they make a big different in controlling the bounce but don't completely cure it. Better dampers are on the upgrade list just to make the right choice

Isn't it too low with the HR springs? I don't want to make the car unpractical. Just stiffer and with better chassis control.

Definitely not too low, obviously you need to be careful but I haven't had any issues.

I fitted the springs a couple of days before heading to France last summer and though that would be the best test of how practical it was given that I would have to navigate ferry ramps etc. A family of 5 on board with roofbox and no issues whatsoever.  The overall drop was approx 30mm but I'm driving a Style model so not sportline.

My only issue is that the dampers still allow the car to bounce too much. You need to go slowly over ramps otherwise the car will rebound and bang due to the shorter spring travel whereas before it would have bounced 2 or 3 times!

I think a better/firmer damper could solve this which would leave me with a nicely sorted car.  The springs make a huge difference to handling so I wouldn't go back to the standard setup, and the car is also easier to wash😁

Thanks for your feedback. Did your wife or family complain about the stiffness? My other car is a Mini with a Bilstein B12 suspension (eibach springs and b8 dampers) and my wife always complains of how stiff and uncomfortable it is. She is right, but the car is bloody fun to drive.

Not all all, no one noticed any difference!  They don't make it any stiffer really_maybe that tells you how soft the standard dampers are? I would think a damper change will bring about extra stiffness but I don't think it's ever going to be overly stiff.

Thanks. Yes standard dampers are crap and way too soft. They can’t control the weight of the car body. I think I’ll go for the dampers once the warranty is overdue next year. I love the looks with the springs too but it might be too much.

A few pics to give you an idea.  I'm on 17" wheels as you can see.

Mine has the sportline dampers I think they are different, however it’s a better handling car with the springs on. Agree with mark that better dampers would make it properly polished and it is in the plan.
I do a lot of site work a lot of full car family travelling and it’s been absolutely fine.
where are you bard mate. If you are anywhere near the north east You are welcome to try mine out
