Roomster (2012) Third Brake light problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2012 Roomster 1.2 Petrol. Recently I noticed the third brake light was not working, however all other tail lights were. I looked at replacements which were hard to find but my local dealer quoted £24 (I have the clear LED version). To be sure I tested the wiring at the connector and it gave back 4 volts when the brake pedal was pressed.

Ended up ordering a brand new boxed replacement from ebay which came with trim. Fitted this morning however the replacement does not work.

I'm wondering if I've been unlucky and been sent a duff, or if there's some other problem. Does 4 volts for an LED light sound right? Looked at other posts and tested the rear wiper/ washer which is all OK.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. :-)

Not sure why I didn't think of this before, but printed on the connector of the LED light connector is 12v 1.5w. Guess the 4v at the connector is the issue. Now, just to find the problem!

Just an update...

Chatted to a mechanic friend who thought there may be a break in the wiring, and if anywhere it would likely be in the conduit between the boot lid and the body of the car. Sure enough the wire for the led brake light was broken, and the cover on others had split (see pic). A wire connector and some electrical tape and we're back in business. Thought I'd post just in case this helps someone else.

I now have a spare led and trim if anyone needs one! 😉

Hi JustinO and welcome.

It's a well-known problem on door looms, less so on tailgate looms.  Good that you've been able to fix it

Funnily enough, same problem on my wife's 2012 diesel Roomster, 3rd brake light cut and central locking cable insulation cut. In my opinion, there should be cloth tape wrap throughout the rubber conduit. Anyway, 15min to fix once you know where the problem is.
