Noise from front left. TDI170 4x4 elegance

Featured Replies

There's been a whining, droning sort of noise from the car (hard to pinpoint) for a while, with a quick, repeating, speed related knock from ahead of the passenger footwell when the car is unweighted over bumps etc (Not COMPLETELY unweighted, I'm not a lunatic)

and when turning right under power.

I've been under the car several times and can't feel anything loose, and I have been pushing and shoving things about properly. The engine is solid on its mounts.

We had the car into the garage and the rear propshaft coupling was replaced, it seems to have reduced the din, but the machine gun rattle is still there. I'm thinking CV joint / driveshaft.

If it it, what's the knock (no pun intended) on effect of the 600 mile drive we've got next weekend? There isn't a chance to sort it out til then at least.

If it isn't, where else could the din be emanating from? It's got the underbody protection, and they're always a bit gravelly in there. I don't think it's that and the heatshields are all secure.

My 2010 yeti did this from new, dealer never did resolve this over the 65k miles I drove it for. The noise did slightly change as time went on. Initially it was like a ratchet clicking as the the nose of the car rose with acceleration, changed to a groaning creak as the car got older. I am convinced it was a semi seized anti roll bar bush, clicking as it moved instead of smoothly rotating. Happened when accelerating hard and particualrly turning right out of a junction.

Nothing ever failed though, and the dealers attempts to solve it included new driveshafts, new front shocks and several other parts.

A small stone trapped between brake disc and shield has been known to cause all manner of strange rattles.

Tried leaving SWMBO at home? ;)

Could be this, I had a stone trapped in front disc and it sounded like the drive shaft was completely shot, driving while turning caused such a noise I thought the wheel was about to come off. Dealer identified the problem and quickly removed the piece of flint that was causing the problem, however, they had to strip the brake down to get the flint out.
