New Kodiaq VED First Year Rate increase from 01/04/2020 *BEWARE*

Featured Replies

Unless I missed it, I haven’t seen anything in the press about the increases in road tax this year.

You would think there’d be lots of articles about registration of cars prior to the change to save £££’s

My Man has promised to register my replacement on 31March to beat the price hike.

Fingers crossed.

As it is allegedly in UK already I do hope to preview it in dealer’s back yard sometime in March ahead of the changeover.

It will be interesting making the swap over as “end date” is 6 April.

It would certainly leave a nasty taste if one were unexpectedly stung for several hundreds of pounds extra for VED under the the new rules - which are rather confusing.

As per one of the above threads, I have struggled to find a clear definition of the actual “CO2” level for the vehicles under the new rules. I only see multiple figures on the the Skoda UK pages.

Yes my new sportline was also meant to be registered on 31st of March so as to beat the tax hike but due to Corona was done a few days earlier, did you get it from WEG ???

Hi all,

I was interested to read this thread because this is just happening to us. We actually ordered a Kodiaq 1.5 TSI SEL DSG back in September last year for a feb 2020 delivery on a lease. We had an update in 1st week feb telling us it was in build and to expect delivery around 4 weeks later, ie early March.

In the end we started hearing nothing, other than it was stuck in the port in the UK in early March and then the lockdown kicked in march 23rd and we've only just started getting any comms again, and this was to say that they were going to need to change the contract hire rate to increase it by £444 per year because of tax changes.

I checked my contract and although VED is included it does say if tax rate increases after the contract was issued the customer needs to pay the extra.

But......I have pushed back and said no because I ordered in Sep and the car should have been here already in Feb or early march before the lockdown and that is was Skoda's choice not to collect the cars from the ports and register them before 1st April.

What do you think?

I also think they are over charging me on a 2 year lease this is £888 for tax increase? but reading the above it isnt that much because of what would have been paid before and also is there an effect on the 2nd year tax?

Surely the government must accept also that they introduced lockdown that caused cars destined for March to be delayed so its surely not fair to apply the increases in that case?

Total increase I'm sure is £635 for the first year only. I am paying this upfront on my 3 year lease which was meant to be here this week but hay ho no one predicted covid 19.  If I wanted to pay monthly then they were adding around £20 per month on

Thanks OK so they have defo asked us for more than they should.

Out of interest, was your expected delivery always in June? Or have you also been waiting for it since feb or march? Ours was via Marshalls

Was always June bot ordered in January so was made aware then

well if you dont mind Solid Blue SE L with no optional extras, there could be one going spare in the next week if we dont agree something reasonable with the lease company.....as my view is they could have registered ours in March but chose not to so Im not willing to pay the additional tax. I might meet them halfway though.....liking the look of the Mercedes GLB otherwise, which is a similar lease cost at the moment.

This is what we ordered, energy blue Sel with Dsg but I had asked for heated steering wheel and triglav alloys

I'll try and answer those Tax increases. ( I hope I've got this right! ). A basic 1.5tsi DSG SE-L is well under the £40k luxury tax threashold so we can forget that.

In March, the 1st year VED rate was based on a Co2 output of 136g/km which falls into band  H ( 131-150 ) = £210

The new WLTP based rates came into effect on 1st April 2020

In April, the 1st year VED rate would be based on a Co2 output of 171g/km which falls into band J ( 171-190 ). This is where it gets slightly confusing because different publications were producing different figures. The rate was supposed to be £855 but they increased this to £870 in the March budget.

So the increase in first year tax by registering a new car after 1st April is £870 less £210 = £660

You then revert to paying ( at current rates ) £150 each subsequent year.

The standard 1.5 SE-L DSG is very unlucky because it just falls in to that J category. If the WLTP had been just 1g/km Co2 less, the tax would have been £540 at current rates. In other words you're paying an extra £330 in tax for that 1g/km Co2.  To rub salt in the wound, the manual version produces 170g/km so just scrapes in to that lower band i.e. the manual is £330 cheaper to tax. What a bummer!

Just acquired a 2020 L & K , while as usual the dealership give you all the plus points but not the negative RFL  info as the Car List is over £40k even though it was registered in March.

Im not really sure the thinking behind the additional first year tax imposed for vehicles over £40k, why that particular figure. I can understand you'r annoyance at the added tax.

For me, Skoda would not budge from the additional £888 they wanted from us, despite with the help you all provided on this forum pointing out the difference was actually £660 as they had not accounted for the tax that was already included pre-april, so we refused to accept a revised contract out of principle and we now have a Mercedes GLB 200d AMG premium arriving next week

Couldn't agree more.   From what I've seen many dealerships no matter who the manufacturer is, won't ignore the annual tax on their vehicle advert ( they may be obliged to mentioned VED by law, dunno ), but what they will say is something like " new VED rate changes in April 2020 may apply to this vehicle. Please check with dealership for latest info. ".

It's all very clock and dagger.

I was handed the keys to my new bear a couple of weeks ago. I was supposed to get it the weekend that lockdown happened. Due to that, it wasn't registered until after the April hike. Thankfully my dealer was really good to me and absorbed the cost the higher tax after Skoda UK said that they wouldn't.
