End of Red Calipers ? - Pipe and Slippers

Featured Replies

Much to SMWBO’s joy, after 12 years of VRS ownership and a brief stint with a Golf GTI 245 PP, today I bought an almost new 272 L&K Super-Barge replete with funky digi dash, sun roof, spare wheel and the L & K standard goodies.  As I’ve previously read on this forum,  its Canton is much better than the Octy Canton. The VW GTI was intended be a stop-gap for me until the new VRS Octy finally appeared however it was just too small for me and 2 passengers with all our sports kit travelling 2-3 times per week and SWMBO, also loves to travel with a full wardrobe. The L&K was lovely on a busy A1 but a bit floaty on Lincs A/B roads even with DCC in sport mode. Whilst it can put the power down on the straights, my current opinion is that if anybody thinks their 4x4 Superb can keep up safely with a GTI on rural twisties, I’d rather not be their passenger. I took the GTI out for a 2 hour goodbye yesterday in sport mode and it was epic. However it can’t compete in the real world of 95% of load lugging and dull commutes. I’ve scratched the itch of  ‘must have one’ and still have my Z1000 for getting the heart going. You’ll see by the snaps that our cat approves.

I wonder which shy new 4x4 owner would disagree? ;)

Shame you couldn’t live with the Golf. Yours was a damn fine example.  I was looking at both a TCR and Clubsport  today.  Very very nice.

I think the Canton is better because it was designed specifically for the Superb, whereas the one in the Octy is a ‘generic’ model.

Enjoy the 280. Nice colour

P.S - I think the dealer forget to remove the cat during the PDI

I agree with Redboy about the floaty suspension even on the 15mm lower Sportline steel springs and dampers it doesn't handle as well as the Vrs245 or steer as nicely, lets face it the Superb wasn't built for the track but with 360bhp it don't half get down the straight bits quickly. Mile munching comfort and transporting 5 adults and their luggage are where it is peerless in its price bracket. Even an Ateca seems a tad small in comparison for very similar money. Still on target for 600 miles on my current tank which no Golf GTi is ever going to achieve as a bonus. Enjoy your new motor Redboy and if you map it you won't believe how quickly it will be able to pass a 242bhp hot hatch.

Interesting... I went from a GTI Clubsport (bit stiffer and grippier than the standard GTI) to the 272 Sportline DCC and my impression is that although it's not as keen to change direction, the body control on the Sportline is more than acceptable and the grip very high, to the point that in the real world I would have no trouble sticking to the tail of my Clubsport. In fact, the way the 272 deploys AWD to exit corners even with a buried foot without sweating at all would probably make the GTI's driver worry.

That been said, I won't take the Sportline to the track as I did a few times with my Clubsport and I drive it like I stole it much less often than I did the GTI, it just doesn't feel right or very politically correct :D   But it is much more effective than it would seem. I wonder how different are the L&K springs to the Sportline's, and how different is the non-DCC Sportline to the DCC Sportline, I keep hearing this so I'd love to drive them and see it for myself.

For sure, If you are still craving cornering, springs and ARB upgrade should provide a very noticeable improvement.

Interesting, I bow to your greater experience and have no doubt that it can pull out of  bends well, perhaps I just need to drive it a bit more. The GTI certainly felt more urgent than the  L&K even in sport mode, perhaps down to the extra weight and I think a little less torque.

Love the colour of the Golf, is it Atlantic blue?

We just downsized from a Leon Estate FR to a Golf 245 PP, manual gearbox, same wheels as yours but Indium grey and leather as SWMBO didn't like the tartan.

Cannot believe how well the Golf rides compared to the Leon and that is on poor Lincolnshire roads.

I hoping we don't miss the boot on the Leon, to early to tell at the moment.

Would a Golf R estate not tick both boxes?

Great pic of the Superb 👍🏻

Yes Atlantic Blue, lovely colour and seemed to show a fair bit of metallic flake in direct sunlight and purplish at night. You'll know that the exhaust sounds very good on

the overrun in sports mode  and cold starts, If you have a family you may miss the Leon's space but that will be all. Mine was DSG and from my stage 1 VRS  manual

memory,  think that manual GTI is better for initial instant response however once under way, DSG probably beats it. There were occasional slight pauses between

pressing the loud pedal then a very smooth and rapid pick up. I will miss its nimbleness and excellent economy, I drove 90 miles to PX it in sport mode  and it recorded 40 Mpg. Even thrashing it a bit the day before I sold it, the mpg was 30.

No because the Golf R Estate is ugly though more practical.
