Air Con not working

Featured Replies

Hi All, Love my Roomster, 2013 model with no problems so far.

This morning the air con would not turn on. Pushed the switch but the indicator light stayed off. Turned the control to screen and still no joy.

Fan was on and air temp 9 degrees. Aircon was topped up 4 years ago!

I was planning to get it re-gassed but was wondering if there was a better place to start. Have I missed anything?

THANKS

VCDS scan of the HVAC module would be wise, if you can find a member nearby who could do so for you. A more precise location would help with that.

If you are confident with disconnecting VW Group type electrical connectors have a look inside the connector that goes onto the G65 refrigerant pressure sensor, look for dampness and corrosion of contacts.  Not sure where this will be located precisely on a Roomster but possibly just in front of the expansion tank on one of the alloy pipes running above the offside chassis leg.

Check cabin fuses, and have a look in the engine bay for any 'dangling'/broken wires in the vicinity of the compressor.

The bit I find most strange about this is that usually when there is a fault with the air con the indicator light on the button or whatever comes on regardless of whether its working or not.

Yours must be different to our 2012 model, the a/c light is always on unless you turn the fan to zero.  Comes back on fan 1-4

We never turn a/c off (and thus have never needed to regas it in nearly 8 years).   But I did check it does turn on and off pressing the button.

If you have rotary switches, I don’t think the distribution knob affects it, but there is something linked to temperature knob because turning it to fully cold also turns on recirc without pressing recirc button.  Is this working, might help identifying if problem with controller or corroded button or connection

Thanks all for your wise words. Looks like it is electrical rather than a gas issue. I will do some wiring connection / fuse checks and maybe talk to a automotive electrical specialist. I am based on Wirral, there is a guy in Moreton that may be worth a chat with. Thanks for the help..

Went to check the fuses and connections this afternoon and found maybe not an aircon issue at all.

In day to day use I usually have the fan on 1, on checking the aircon I discovered when I turn it to 2 or higher the aircon light goes on. With fan on 1 the fan does not appear to be operating at all and aircon light is off - so maybe it is a fan issue and not an aircon issue.

Any ideas what may be causing the fan not to fan when set to 1?

😀

Fan resistor failed. Very common problem, be sure to replace the pollen filter too if it looks clogged, the airflow helps to cool the resistor.

Thanks Wino for such a prompt reply.

Some helpful youtube videos that walk me through the process - the job looks fiddly but not too difficult.

Thanks for the advice.

Just buy a new resistor unit, (about £5) which from memory is a circular shape (dont need to rewire the resistor if change unit), its a standard VAG unit fits various small cars, Fabia, polo, Audi A1 etc.  Think I got mine from motor factor on ebay

then follow You tube video (takes about 15 minutes)   there was a thread about changing this a while back

I did it, easy job, but I did need to buy a long shaft screwdriver to undo the tight screws at back of glovebox, I couldn't reach to undo them with standard length screwdriver, so try and slacken them in advance in case you have same problem
