Interior Rattles...

Featured Replies

Hi all

Some time back i posted about annoying rattling from the internal trim / dash. This is on a 1L SEL 69 plate.

After 3 times back with the dealers over the past few months think I'm getting closer to minimal vibrating / rattling noises.

The latest 'fix' was to remove the door cards and rap foam noise damping tape around the door release cables, they done both front doors.

I still seem to have a vibrating / rattle in the dash, I'll try pushing on the plastic end cover on the drivers side dash tomorrow... seems to go away once the cabin has warmed up. Maybe something to do with the blower air vent.

Also noticed that the rear window now has some surface scratches, looks like when they did the complementary wash some grit or something damaged the surface.

Not had a chance to have a proper look as the storm today stopped me getting out there today.

Anyone else had glass damage like this from a dealer wash?

Not sure how they will react if i mention it tomorrow to them... and the continued rattling....

Cheers

Daft question but have you put any glasses in the sunglasses storage box????? I could hear a rattle for days in ours when we first got it and couldn't work out where it was coming from. I was ready to book it in to be looked at when i realised the Mrs had put some sunglasses in the sunglasses holder and it was the glasses that were rattling inside.

A quick re position of them and the noise stopped.

Similar thing happened to me. I had a memory stick rattling in the armrest box. Took me ages to find out what it was.

Many cars start to have more rattles in cold weather as everything contacts a little due to the temperature then goes back to normal when you warm up.

I wouldn't worry.

Its been back 3 times for different rattlings. I'm not talking quiet in the background type, proper sweary tourette's inducing outbursts.

It was great when i first had it, then after a few weeks it all started.

Had one in the lower part of the centre console, think it might of been a wiring loom vibrating on the hard plastic.

Then a few weeks later proper rattling coming from the centre dash air vent area. They reckon they found a loose screw in there, whether it was just not done up or actually floating about i don't know.

Then the drivers side door has a sort of vibrating rattling sound, about level with the end of the dash and door.

Soon after the passenger side door had a proper rattle going on.

They found the door release cable was again vibrating / rattling against the door card. They fixed that by applying some of that sticky backed foam around the cable. they did the drivers side as well.
The tech i took out in it to demonstrate said it was pretty terrible and just crap, that was on 2 different occasions same guy.

I've found if i stick a couple of fingers between the end of the dash and door card i can turn the rattling on and off.

To top it off today, along with the nasty scratches I seem to now have on the back window a lorry passed on the opposite side of the road while i was stationary in traffic, flicked up a stone or something and has chipped the front windscreen right in the middle of the drivers side. Bunch of 3 small chips. Then i see another bunch on the passenger side.

So ****** to it!!!! cars 5 months old now, first bits of external damage. Never a good day that one.

I know your pain. Did you also check for paintwork chips? If you haven't already done so, get the touch-up paints. I keep mine in the car with a 'field chip repair kit' that includes:

  • battery powered work torch
  • beauty mirror to inspect up under the wheel arches -- there's paintwork there too (why, VAG, why?!)
  • fine microfibre cleaning cloth
  • isopropyl wipes
  • plastic toothpicks for fine application
  • metal palette
  • good-quality blue masking tape for applying the clear coat
  • scissors to cut said
  • Vaseline for when paint cannot be applied immediately e.g. because of rain

I never let anyone but me wash my car using checked and cleaned microfibre mitts and cloths.

Unfortunately what with the dirty, disintegrating state of our roads, windscreen and paint chips are an unavoidable fact of life; these days I consider them part of a new car's 'Christening'. You can reduce them from the vehicle in front by keeping back, but the high-energy stuff that comes flying in from the offside is often unavoidable. Just have to inspect regularly and keep on top of them. And also remember that the standard for paintwork appraisal is from 1m away with decent eyesight in good light -- not perfect under close inspection. It's called 'detailing' for a reason...

I got two huge stone chips in my windscreen within the first two months of having the car. Not having to have an MOT for two years meant i just lived with two huge chips (one in passenger side cracked eventually) until I gave in and got a new windscreen (i can guarantee if i'd put a new windscreen on straight away, i'd have got more chips!). Haven't had one since thankfully, but have gained a somewhat scratched windscreen (and rear windscreen, from the amount of salty **** on the roads over winter. In summer i'm forever cleaning the windscreen of bugs. In winter i'm forever cleaning the windscreen of salt, grit, mud etc. Damn I wish I lived in a different country! It's a pain in the arse trying to keep two bits of glass clean!
