oil brand quality question

Featured Replies

got a 101k mile BKC 2006 octy.

needs a service and want to make sure it doesnt throw a rod out the side of the block.

was going to use Shell Helix HX8 ECT 5W-40 (which is the same viscosity to what Skoda used according to the service history) or 5w-30. but then saw  Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W-30.

thinking of remapping to 135bhp and very occasionally towing a 835kg caravan. our daily journey is quite short at 5miles one way, but yearly mileage is about 6k miles.

so should i splurge on the expensive oil and use fixed interval or variable. or use the cheaper oil and fixed or variable.

0W offers better cold (winter) starting performance than 5W

Changing to 30 from 40 (second part of number) will affect the hot viscosity, in blunt terms the higher number will be thicker and more suited to a worn engine.

Not sure I would bother to change to 0W oil from 5W.

If you are typically doing 5 mile journeys (total 6k miles annually) then go for fixed annual services.   Therefore not worth buying the premium oil.

VW 504 / 507 is not more Premium than VW502.  It is just Long Life oil.

5W-40

As per others, this is just a statement of the oil viscosity (in the quoted case 5 centi-stokes at 0C, and 40 centi-stokes at 100C), not of "oil quality". If you're rarely to never doing trips over 5 miles between cold starts, get the thinnest oil because it will pump up pressure faster.

Do either of those oils carry the VAG approval number for the PD engine? - Sorry but my memory forgets things like that.

That to me is the most important thing.

I have the same engine and had the same remap done at the same mileage, very happy with it but it does sound rather gruff now when using the extra power. Its still a tractor engine, nothing will change that.

When my Skoda garage used Shell Helix UIltra 0W 30W I had no chain tensioner start up noise from cold. Since the garage changed to Castrol Edge 5W 30W I get the noise so the thinner oil circulates quicker

See the sticky re lubricants/servicing.

AFAIK the 1.9 BKC is the best of the bunch, reliable/no DPF. It was early BXE examples which grenaded.

Use VW spec 505.01 5W-40 oil and change annually for a happy engine.

Thanks all for the info was just a bit confused why Skoda used 5w40 and not 5w30.

j.r. Have you gone for the shark map also? Is it a diy type like black smoke or do you have to visit the supplier?

They used VW 504 / 507 so 5w 30 FS III (Long Life) because they use that for Fixed or Variable Servicing with TDI or TSI,s.

VW502 so 5w 40 FS was fine for Fixed Servicing of TSI's.

It’s a TDI and says they used platinum 5w40?

just to confuse stuff Euro are doing 5w40 for £30.99 plus 45% discount and the 5w30 is £68.99 plus 45% discount!!!

cypher 7.

At the moment for the Yeti (108hp) I am leaning towards a Celtic remap to allegedly 193hp, I think in reality, in fact I hope its just the standard VAG 170hp map with a bit of added BS from flattering dyno tests, the before was already at 120hp and not 108.

The Octavia was just a remapped ECU from ebay on a second hand unit, I still have the original ECU, no idea who's map it is or even who the seller was now, I think the modest ones are well copied.

Ok shell’s site doesn’t list the 5w40 for this car only euro’s site does. Think I’d best get the 0w30 ultra that shell lists, it’s only a fiver more than the 5w30.

@cypher007

5 litres of 5w 30 FS III to VW 507 00 in Asda for about £20-24 is perfect.  Maybe even being cleared cheaper just now.

I got some the other day from Asda for £19 not bad for 507.00 oil

I've been using both the Asda or Tesco oil to 507.00 for the majority of my oil changes with absolutely no issues in 48 months and 65,000 miles ... Normally changed every 9,000 miles which was until last October about every 8 months... I'm now only doing a return 10 mile run per day to work so will be lucky to do 4-5,000 a year so it'll be once a year now .. Maybe twice I've still to decide
