Apple car play won’t connect?

Hi everyone, has anyone else had any issues with getting apple car play to connect? Several times over the last few weeks I have plugged my phone into the car via USB and the phone has begun to charge but the car does not recognise that the phone has connected. I’ve tried turning the infotainment off and on, restarting the car, rebooting the phone and unplugging and reconnecting the phone but nothing works, next time I get in the car it connects fine! 
 

Any advice or previous experience would be greatly appreciated! 

I thought the phone had to be unlocked for it to connect. So either unlock it then connect the cable or If you connect the cable with the phone locked you need to just unlock it then it'll connect.

 

Or it could also be a dodgy cable.

On my Superb I have to press and hold menu and power for about 10 seconds to reboot the stereo when this happens...
