sucking sound vrs 1.8t

Featured Replies

hi, new here.

just picked up an octavia mk1 vrs estae as a run around. but have instantly fallen for it. so now im thinking i might wanna get into it a little more. there is a sucking noise coming from behind glove box area when i accelerate a bit harder. im guessing something to do with air intake? the previous owner has changed a few things under the bonnet. wondering maybe if i take some pictures anyone can help identify whats been done and if its been done poorly. one thing thst has been messed with is the battery mounting has been taken away so its floating in there, looks as though some kind of non factory pipe is running where the battery would sit if the mount was still there.  will take pics in the day light tomorrow and add them.

cheers

Quite possibly; does it still have the standard air box (about the size of the battery, and black) or did the previous owner waste money on an aftermarket cone filter (clue is in the name).

Hi @sk15

This is an original engine layout

there could also just be a folder on the end of the intake pipe instead of a long cold air intake pipe.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry been a bit busy and not had the car with me to take photos. After a little research I think an intercooler has been fitted but not using correct pipe for engine bay possibly? The pipe is holding the passenger side light out from where it should sit.

Just from this picture you should know that this car is going to be a can of worms.

you need to get a hold of all the standard parts and remove all that bodgery to begin with.

not sure why there are 2 map sensors, the one that’s plugged in looks like it’s just floating about 🤣

Yeah I did have a feeling this may be the case. Someone's had a right bodge haven't they. Would anyone know what parts I need to order to start with? Will it pass an mot? I'm a right noob with cars. This was cheap and I just wanted a run around for work. I may see if it would go through an mot and then try sell it on to someone who wants a project. Or I treat it as one myself and see if I can make any money on it by getting it back to how it should be. Thoughts?

You are going to struggle if you are a noob.  You really need to assess how bad it is, check the whole of the induction system and intercooler and probably all the vacuum lines. That they go to the right place and that nothing is leaking

A scan with VCDS should show up any sensor or electrical issues

does it run and tick over ok?

Stuff that leapt out at me:-

  1. Pipe bodged with tape leaning against fan shroud. That may be the radiator top hose, in which case it's a burst hose waiting to happen to you.
  2. Battery cover missing.
  3. Not sure what's happened to the battery top fuses.

So it seems to run fine. Idles very stable. The fuses have been dumped under the battery. The pipe that's going across the battery area in the picture was obviously in the way so they removed the battery casing and fuses to make room. I bought it cheap and it drives nicely. It's just wether I can be arsed with the hassle of having a go myself. Or the cost of getting someone to do it. O quite like the idea of having a tinker but this may be a bit of a heavy start aye?! Haha.

I doubt it will pass an MOT if the battery is not secure but I could be wrong, the capacity of the battery is also half of what it should be.

I wonder if the engine has been swapped or maybe just the intake manifold as the throttle body is usually on the other side of the car, this is maybe why everything has been bodged to fit. Is the engine code on the log book and does it tally up with any marking on the timing belt cover?

Well, @sk15 still has a stock air cleaner box (visible behind battery as usual). I can't see why you'd retain that and disconnect the throttle body. All the 1.8T and 1.9D variants I've seen, even the 1.9SDi, have the intake between the engine and bulkhead, and the cambelt on the other end of the engine to the battery and gearbox.

I'd agree about needing the battery to be secure, but the battery top fuse bar is made of plastic, so it's surely not the main securing system anyway?

The battery tray that secures it is underneath and has a box lid cover to go over. The fuses are supposed to be connected onto the terminals I assume. That's what my van is like anyway.

The fuse box just clips on to the rest of the plastic battery casing. It’s not permanently affixed by any substantial brackets as such.

if you take the battery out it just floats in mid air which is why there is nothing to secure it to at the moment.

Thanks very much for all the input guys. Really appreciate it. I think I'm gonna have a go and see if I can get it back to half sensible myself. So I will no doubt be back with more questions.

@SuperbTWM - I think we're pretty much in agreement about the battery then.

Well, Dean has posted a stock 1.8T top end, and one with just a CAI, upthread.

Looks like a couple of "lads" thought they'd have a go at being mechanics one weekend!!!

I certainly wouldn't entertain getting a garage to sort this out and make some money off the car as the value is probably through the floor all ready.... get it safe and drive it till it drops would be my advice at best.
