280 DSG - 2nd Gear Lurch?

Featured Replies

Please excuse the ignorance if this is a standard par for the course part of DSG ownership, but in my 280 I find that when I'm slowing down to come to a stop, fourth to third is smooth, but when it goes from third to second the engine braking is very intense, and second gear just seems to bring the car to a much quicker stop than otherwise expected with a static physical brake push. I find it's also very obvious when the clutch pack disengages when it's still in second and rolling into a stop with the car lurching forward a bit due to the relative lack of engine braking. It definitely makes it very challenging to brake smoothly and gently!

Is this normal for a DSG? I've not driven one before besides a 1.5 DSG Tiguan courtesy car for 2 days, and that didn't seem to lurch around 2nd anywhere near as much as this.

The brakes were checked last week as part of a dealer health check and were A-OK at 30% wear all round.

As a fellow 280 6 spd owner i don't have those characteristics im afraid. Very smooth under the brakes, dips tp 1st at very low speed.

Take up can be felt 1st to 2nd if pressing on a bit.

Are you on D drive or S?  S is very keen on the lower gears.

I've experienced this but it's very mild when it happens. Yours sounds pretty jarring.

Definitely just in D, all normal mode, no changes. I've noticed the engine braking seems quite aggressive in S, but have put that down to the engine and DSG. It definitely dips in 1st (moreso with auto start stop) but I thought this was again a characteristic of the engine. But I've not had too much to compare it to.

To help with the description, the lurch whilst in second is like when you're driving a manual car in a low gear and you depress the clutch while you're gently pressing on the brake and the car kind of feels like it moves away forward from you as the engine braking effect disappears. I figure it's the same principle in a DSG I just didn't think it'd be so pronounced.

Doesnt sound right. Mine goes to 1st and the clutch does not disengage until stopped AND firm push on brake pedal. You can see the revs dip to 800 ish rpm rather than 1000.

I think the hardest thing in an auto is the smoorh roll to stop. In a manual you can release the brakes just as you stop to unload the suspensionsion dip gradually rather than the nose down and jerk like on a train.

I don’t know if what @Elson faces is normal or not, but it took me a long time to really get used to DSG behavior. After 2 years of ownership and ~41000, it seems ok. Stopping gently a restarting smoothly has been challenging for a while. And I don’t speak about S&S often jamming my attempts to stop properly... 🙄

Something like this happens to me (from time to time), not every time and probably not as intense as you mention, but there is a downshift with a lurch and fairly sharp change of deceleration.

A little like a clumsy downshift.

Most of the time, however its fairly smooth to the stop. But the stop itself and start is always jerkier than I would like...well, my wife who often complains. You have to be super vigilant to modulate the brake pedal perfectly to come to a smooth stop.

I do notice automatic cruise control, stops smoothly, but the braking intensity just prior to that is too intense for me. Can't win :)

I do notice “stronger than expected” deceleration when slowing with throttle closed as it changes down, compared to a true automatic, as there is more engine braking. But I wouldn’t describe it as lurching. You can feel it, but only just.

I was looking for this topic as I agree @Elson. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd (not sure from 4th to 3rd) is felt harder, but I think you can feel this more when car is cold.

If I really want to brake gentle, it is not possible, you feel engine braking and change of gears. I am new to DSG, so I thought I need some time to make it work, but as I see now I am not the only one.
Probably it just downshifts on higher rpm's when it is cold. I will try to look at rpm's next time (if I remember).
