No boost

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Me again :)

When I got the car, the turbo would cut out and no boost, but a quick restart sorted that out.

Since October, until last week - the car cut out 4 times I think in that time and 3,000 miles.

However, in the last week it’s cutting out on a daily basis - sometimes more than once.

I don’t have access to VCDs currently (trying to find someone with it) so wanted to describe the symptoms.

1. Sometimes boost goes when changing from 1st to 2nd at around 2,500 - 3,000 rpm

2. Sometimes goes above 3,000rpm in 3rd

3. Mainly seems to go in 5th at around 70mph/2,500rpm

Came home Thursday, blasted it in 2nd and then 3rd - pulled brilliantly so it doesn’t happen all the time. There sounds like they could be a small air leak, but I am not sure where to start looking but from reading symptoms - it does point towards a boost sensor.

I have read about the vanes too but I’m hopeful it’s more a sensor than cleaning the turbo.

Anyone else experienced same issues? 1.9 TDI 110 ASV engine.

Yes at this time of year every year for 15 years 😀

It was the vanes sticking, a Mr Muscle enema would alleviate things but I simply learned to drive very gently in cold weather from a cold start until the engine reached temperature, that way it would never overboost, OK sometimes there was no choice, setting out with a loaded trailer up the hill where I live, having to overtake a tractor (would always leave room in case the boost dropped out) luckily on the ASV all it takes is a quick ignition reboot and normal service is resumed.

Thanks again JR.

Its funny how you should mention that as I have just had a new thermostat fitter given my lack of heating and coolant issues, the car is running much hotter now and even with me really running through the gears yesterday, the turbo didn’t go into limp mode once. I’m wondering if the car was thinking it’s cold a lot due to the thermostat before and now it’s ok? Strange if so, but I’m happier - just gotta hope I don’t lose anymore coolant otherwise could be a radiator replacement next.

I dont think its a question of how hot the car/engine/ecu thinks it is rather that the vanes in the turbo and possibly the actuator mechanism are sticky when cold and ease up when everything warmed through by heat soak.

Give it a Mr Muscle enema and the drive it like you stole it, that would normally buy me a year to 18 months.

Did you also get the dash warning of "Emissions Workshop!" coming up?

I wonder how easy it is to get the turbo off and give it a proper flushing out...

The dashboard on my MK1 Elegance could not write, only light up indicator lights.

Never a MIL light but the overboosts were recorded as fault codes, thousands of em 😀
