Intermittent engine light / 'Engine Fault! Workshop!'

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Bought my 09 LE CR VRs last week, bit smokey on the test drive and Engine Light on but was sorted for MOT and passed without advisories. Driven around 150 miles and now every so often there will be a beep, the glow plug light flashes for a second or two and Engine Fault Workshop! appears on the MFD (started at around 120 miles and has happened atleast 5 times). It then disappears as quickly as it appeared. The Engine light also came on without any other fanfare and stayed on. Scanned with Carista as it's all I have available currently. Error's are as follows;

OBD2:
P2563 (pending) - Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance
P2196 (pending) - O2 Sensor Signal Biased/Stuck Rich Bank 1 Sensor 1
P2002 (pending) - Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Engine:
P0671 - Glow Plug/Heater Cylinder 1 (Q10) circuit, electrical Fault in Circuit
P2563 - Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor, Circuit Range / Performance
P2196 - O2 Sensor Signal Bank 1 Sensor 1, Biased / Stuck Rich
P2002 - Particulate Trap Bank 1, efficiency below threshold

Done some research about all of these codes separately (Glow plug need replacing, likely turbo actuator, lambda sensor in manifold, DPF sooty/exhaust leak/ faulty sensor). Purchased from a second hand car dealer with 30 days of warranty on major items. Where do I stand and any advice?

I'll be calling in the morning as clearly something was covered up to get it through the MOT and maybe I'm wrong but I don't feel like I should be paying for these issues to be sorted.

Thanks in advance everyone! I want to sort these ASAP so I can get on to the more fun stuff 😁

I am no expert but from reading other posts I think there is a short window in which you can reject the car (two weeks?) after which the dealer must repair or replace. I mention this now as the clock is running but I am sure someone will be along soon to give you the legal position. In the interim make a search on consumer sites.

1) P0671

Replace all four glow plugs, not expensive and easy to do...

2) P2563

Fit a new G581 sensor...

3) P2196

Fit new lamba sensor, bank one sensor one is the one of two sensors closest to the engine.

4) P2002

Replace the G450 sensor and perform a forced regeneration on the DPF. Check the ash load inside the DPF to ensure it hasn't reached the end if its life.

Any respected car trader / garage can arrive at the same or similar conclusions, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask the place you bought it from to fix them all.

Don't ignore the DPF issue for long. A faulty G450 means the DPF isn't working as it should, so if it isn't finished already, if you continue to drive around in it then it soon will be.

Thanks silver!

I did some research on rosstech but i haven't developed any first hand knowledge on the car much yet. Taking the car monday for them to look at. At least I have your knowledge on the subject to back me up! Will update once i know whats happening as I love the car and definitely would prefer it fixed instead of returning.

Good luck, let us know how you get on 👍

So! Got the car back on the thursday, (new exhaust pressure sensor, glow plug, and boost pressure sensor) advised to give it a good run to make sure the dpf clears. Drove no differently than before and after 50 miles engine light returned. Back to the garage instead of waiting for the dealer to drop it off. I've got the car back today after having a new actuator fitted and it's like they've given me a different car!

Much better, and most importantly the dealer stood by paying for the work. Thanks for the help guys! Now for a remap.... 😈

Result!

Strange though, as none of those fault codes would ordinarily lead you to the turbo actuator.

Good to know the dealer stood by their car and saw the repair through to a happy resolution!

Yeah its a weird one, did a lot of reading on it, found some posts on a vwaudi forum about similar issues but they struggled with limp mode as well whereas i was just down on power. Possibly the diaphragm had failed or actuator come out of alignment with low usage previous to my buying of the car. Or atleast thats my closest theory 😂
