Cruise control

Featured Replies

Tried the CC on my sons Furbie over the weekend.....got to admit I could get used to it on the motorway:D ........just a small question for those in the know ......does it actually brake the car when going downhill ....because it keeps to the chosen speed very well, even going down some quite steep hills in Cornwall

No , all it can do is apply zero throttle so you just have engine braking to keep you at the chosen speed.

Dr Z is indeed correct. It can only make adjustments to the fuel injected, so it does gain speed on the steepest hills.

Have you used all of its features? You can increase speed by moving the switch right, slow down by pressing the end button. If you want to resume to the last speed after slowing down, just move the switch right.

Its damned handy, I use it more than just NSL roads.

Yeah - I was so glad when my cc retrofit finally worked following my vRS conversion. :) Very good on motorays - I have to say I don't use it on NSL roads much as I'm usually going a bit quick, and don't like it being on around bends (I prefer the natural decelleration with throttle foot in same position rather than it boosting to 1.5 bar+ to maintain 60 mph)

The up/down stalk control is ace. I managed to do 150 miles on the M5 once without disengaging cruise - just used the up/down function to adjust speed every now and then.

is cruise control retro fittable on a fabVRS ?

Yes

One thing to watch on the slowing down bit, it doesn't show your brake lights when you hold the SET button down. So be careful if there are a lot of people about.

Yes it is , though it's a bit more complicated than on an octy.

Quite a few places will do it for you in the region of £200.

I'm not sure if Big K is around still but he used to offer a fitting service

I was thinking Big K .......to get it fitted on the Superb.....

I'm a big fan of cruise control. Back to the original question it doesn't brake but usies the engine to control the speed. I have found that this is much more effective on diesel than on petrol engines.

Mr Cruise is a bit club footed though - so don't expect mpg improvements :(

I have found that this is much more effective on diesel than on petrol engines.

That's interesting - I found the complete opposite  None of the modern diesels I've driven have any useable engine braking below 2500rpm, unlike my old Landie which would come to a complete standstill if you removed your foot from the throttle!

Petrol engines seem to have much better engine braking....

Not sure I'd pay for cruise control as my speed never seems to be constant for long enough to warrant it plus, as Steve pointed out, mpg seems to be better when the driver is in control

Does depend on the driver though :o
