Featured Replies

hi is there any information on vrs  model  for this car version and what is the bad points to look out for

its a dsg  model

Hi gSvrs,

I'm interested in the answers to this question as well. I've been looking at this car for a few weeks now and was quite surprised to see the 2.0 TSI engine failures thread that is pinned on this board, always thought these were pretty damn reliable cars (most other places on the internet certainly give this impression). As a summary from that thread the timing chain tensioner, and timing chain as a result, seem to be one of the biggest issues here with many failing without warning from cold start and mangling the engine (often without warning). I am unsure how prevalent this problem is, especially in the newer models as it would appear there are three versions of the EA888 engine (TSI which was fitted on all FL models, post -09 I believe). As a precuationary measure it is generally advised to get the tensioner and chain changed as soon as possible, seems to cost about £650 or so, unless there is evidence that it already the latest revision of the tensioner. These engines can also suffer with high oil consumption due to failed oil control rings but again I think this was only a specific generation of the engine. Hopefully a more seasoned member of the forum can come along and clarify what I have said so far.

My experience hasn't been great.

2.0TSI's  biggest issue is make sure a revised chain and tension is fitted otherwise that's costly, I had a quote for something nearing 1.2k IIRC, but I can see @jay545 found it much cheaper.

Another common issue is carbon building up on the intake and I had issues with the turbo needing replacement.

All in all I could've just bought a mk3 outright with all the hassle I've had. Still puts a smile on the face but can't help but think I should've stuck with a N/A engine given my shorter journeys.
