Engine tapping noise please advise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I was after some help, I have noticed for a while and it's getting progressively worse a tapping noise coming from the engine. (Total newbie) it seems to be coming from where I'm pointing the camera and stops when the clutch is depressed. It's getting worse and can be heard sometimes in the car with windows shut etc. I'm looking to sell the car soon so would like it sorted.

I recently had a cambelt change as it needed doing and thought it could be related but it's still there.

1.4 tsi petrol

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, would like to know if I can see if it would be covered by my warranty

If this goes when the clutch is depressed it could be flywheel related, or indeed clutch of course.  Many miles on the car? That sounds more like a knock than a tapping.

Looks like you are pointing down towards the gearbox/clutch area, but there is a lot in that place that could be rattly bits.

Manual or DSG?  From memory, the manual cars have a single mass flywheel, but the DSGs a dual mass one.  Sounds a bit like the rattle of a failing DMF to me.

Edit - duh - you talked of "depressing the clutch" - so it's clearly a manual.  Ignore me.  Sorry/

Thanks for the advice, it's done about 65,000 and as far as I know on that clutch, but will get it checked out.

Thanks again
