Cheapest UK car insurance?

Featured Replies

Last time I had insurance in the UK was 2004 so I am completely out of touch, I keep reading headlines of premiums going up every year yet when I hear the prices people are actually paying it seems less than I did all those years ago for a vehicle in a much lower insurance group.

My question is just for interest and for comparison with here in France.

What is the lowest that anybody is paying or knows that others pay for basic Third Party Only insurance on presumably a low group car?

I keep hearing that for many fully comp is no more expensive so if anyone pays a very low premium for that please say so.

Also the same for Classic car insurance if its really cheap.

Thanks in advance.

I have not had Third Part Fire & Theft for over 30 years now.

Have had Classic Insurance lots with Agreed Values and paid around £200-£250 for the past 20 years. (Specialist brokers,  Not Adrian Flux.....)

Car insurance with over 15 years NCB is usually between around £200-£250 as it has been for a long time.

My van insurance but not for commercial use & which uses no NCB is £247.

6 speeding points to add on renewal so that will cost me on each policy.

When i have a Motability can the insurance is included.

With LV= I'm getting renewals around GB£210 a year on an Octy Elegance TDi, which is not a low insurance group car.

Is that for Third Party only or TPF&T?

Recently had to insure MrsG82's mazda 2 on a temporary basis so thought we'd go for a cheap and cheerful TPF&T or TP only.  Turned out to be 180 for TPO or 220 fully comp for the cheapest insurer that wasn't some random bloke.  Minus fees we got back 160 after 3 weeks motoring.  Not sure if it was a good deal but we needed to do it swiftly.

Yes thats the impresion that I had got from UK friends when I said "why on earth do you have fully comp on an old car like that?"

Its the same here in France with the mainstream insurers who all still only do business through high street agents (remember those days!!!) but some of the internet insurers still give a correct price for TPO cover.

Currently cover for me on a 2015 Yeti is £110 TPO or £290 fully comp with breakdown cover, when you look at all the exclusions and the limits of indemnity especially on breakdown then its probably TPO for me as in a total loss an "Expert" will give a value to the vehicle and many have decreed that a RHD vehicle has zero value.

@J.R.

I misunderstood your OP when you are say Low group car.

Low group to me means a low insurance group & nothing to do with a car with a low value that might be less than the cost of the insurance to have it on the road.

I have had £300 cars with a MOT and still paid for Fully Comp on then at £150 or so with a £200 excess.

The TPF & T would only be a few quid less.

Likewise.

I got a surprisingly cheap quote at the weekend.  Fully comp on a not quite classic 1992 Honda:

Cheapest I've seen by far in a very long time.

You both understood me correctly, I wanted to know the cheapest that people were paying or that people know of, I said "presumably a low (insurance) group" because the cheapest quote would likely be for the lowest risk vehicle.

Nonetheless I am interested to hear of any good deals but my specific interest is TPO or TPF&T cover.

RTTMT my later comment was exactly what you have confirmed, I was surprised that people had fully comp on a vehicle that likely was worth less than the premium & excess & had concluded that there must be very little price differential between fully comp & third party.

In the U.K. the majority of the premium is made up of the risk element for the Third Party cover.

insurers are not too bothered about the cost of the “Hull” claim, that’s a known quantity being the market value of the car - be it £300 or £100,000 +. Being a known quantity per vehicle they can make an appropriate charge for this

But the thing that is less certain and potentially much more expensive are third party costs. Putting aside catastrophic personal injury claims, what might on the face of it seem a “fender bender” claim can soon run into a few £000’s as the third party claims not only for the damage to his car, but also a hire car for the 2 weeks plus that his car is off the road, his excess, potentially his legal costs for recovery of his uninsured loss claim and so on. Always assuming they don’t decide they have whiplash, needed to take time off work or even go to the next stage of introducing some sort of fraudulent element to the claim..

Hence the difference between TPO and more extensive covers is relatively small.
